African Americans, World War I, and the Awakening of a “Colored” Manifest Destiny. Du Bois Review: Social Science Research on Race, 1–20. doi:10.1017/S1742058X23000097 Abstract: Different aspects of the African American experience during World War One have been covered since the release of 1974 of Florette Henri’s and Arthur E. Barbeau’s The Unknown Soldiers: African American Troops in World War I. All these studies concur in their assumptions that World War One opened up a new quest for full citizenship and galvanized soldiers and officers alike. A new era started right in the middle of the conflict fueling African American units with hope of change. World War One turned into the matrix for a new form of militancy. However, perhaps World War One did not only trigger a new form of militancy among African Americans. Something else might have snapped in African American (and perhaps African) leaders of the time. This month serves as a poignant reminder of the imperative nature of diversity, inclusion, and cultural awareness within our society. It presents us with an opportunity to deepen our knowledge, amplify Black voices, and advocate for justice and equality. In the realm of educational resources, I recommend the thought-provoking documentary series, "Stamped From The Beginning," available on Netflix. Based on the acclaimed book by Ibram X. Kendi, this series meticulously explores the intricate history of racist ideologies in America. It provides profound insights into the origins of systemic racism and the ongoing pursuit of racial equity. Let us utilize this Black History Month as a catalyst for continued learning, introspection, and actionable steps toward fostering a more inclusive and equitable society. Australian and New Zealand arts and cultural organisations similarly face severe government funding pressure. Government funding is essential for the arts and creativity to thrive. Additionally, organisations must have commercial and business development capabilities to articulate, leverage, and advocate their inherent value through strategic partnerships. These partnerships are essential to underpin organisational purpose and generate funds for growth. Empowering arts organisations with the self-sustaining skills to define an enterprise-wide understanding of their value proposition and strategically unlock it is not just about survival—it's about ensuring they continue flourishing and enriching our society. Strategic collaborations can unlock new opportunities, drive innovation, attract new audiences, and secure new capabilities, revenues, and funding streams. But it's also a no-brainer that government funding is critical to providing organisations with the stability to plan for overall sustainability and lasting success.
