Attended the Ceremonial Opening of Parliament where Sir Patrick Allen, Governor-General of Jamaica, delivered the Throne Speech. Let’s demystify the Throne Speech. What is it and how did it emerge? It is a speech from the throne, in certain monarchies in which the reigning sovereign, or their representative, reads a prepared speech to members of the nation's legislature when a session is opened. The tradition has its origins in the medieval parliament, but the speech from the throne as we know it today first evolved in the late 17th century, when parliament finally established its power over the monarch. Although it is known as the king’s speech, it is actually written by the government, for the monarch. What if the monarch disagrees with the speech? Whatever his private feelings, the monarch must not show any overt preference for any political party, so the speech is always read in as neutral a tone as possible. So what happens when Jamaica becomes a republic? Good question! Many republics, eg Trinidad & Tobago have adopted a practice of having the president address the legislature. In the USA, the president makes an annual State of the Union address, in the Philippines the president makes an annual State of the Nation Address. Its quite likely that our Head of State will continue to give an address, however named.

If a tea-seller, can become the prime minister of a nation, having the highest population, by virtue of merit, and hardwork, you too can do great things. Follow your path, one need not follow the crowd, or be a topper, keep working towards your goal that you have set. As an individual you can do a lot of great things, just have self-belief, patience, and perseverance, and you can make better things happen, than the toppers. Blindly following people, doing something just because somebody else is doing it, might lead one to loose their identity. One’s identity has to be one’s, and one should lead such a path, that they can distinguish themselves from the rest. An individual identity, that is contrastingly different from the crowd, is the need of hour.

1: Prominent U.S. citizen, John Hancock, was born on January 23, 1737. He was the president of what's called the Second Continental Congress in U.S. history, and he was also the first person to sign the American Declaration of Independence. A total of 56 people signed the American Declaration of Independence on different dates. It was written by Thomas Jefferson. 2: On January 23, 1997, Madeleine Albright was sworn in as the U.S. secretary of state after she initially served as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations (UN). She was the first woman to serve as the secretary of state in U.S. history. Born on May 15, 1937, in Czech Republic, she died aged 84 on March 23, 2022, in Washington, D.C. 3: The 24th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified on January 23, 1964. The 24th Amendment prohibits federal and state governments from imposing poll taxes on U.S. citizens before they can participate in federal elections. The U.S. Constitution is comprised of seven articles and twenty-seven amendments. Article V (5) of the U.S. Constitution provides the procedures for the amendment of the Constitution, and the ratification of any new amendments. 4: Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., was established on January 23, 1789, as Georgetown College. #history #worldhistory #ushistory #americanhistory #globalevents #globalaffairs

Our Associate Ben Taumoepeau worked hard during the recent UK election campaign and is now enjoying the pageantry and rich tradition that accompanies the start of a new government. Here's his report from London: Today, the King's Speech from the Throne took place, marking the formal opening of the parliamentary session in the United Kingdom and unveiling the new Labour Government's legislative agenda. It's an important day for Parliament, Prime Minister Keir Starmer and the new government. It’s an event steeped in tradition, with many interesting historical quirks and traditions: 🚪 Black Rod’s Summons: The Gentleman or Lady Usher of the Black Rod is sent to summon the House of Commons to the House of Lords. The doors of the House of Commons are slammed shut in Black Rod's face, symbolizing the independence of the Commons. 🚗 State Coach and Procession: The monarch travels to the Palace of Westminster in the State Coach, accompanied by a grand procession. 🎩 Cap of Maintenance and Sword of State: The Cap of Maintenance is carried by a senior peer and the Sword of State is carried before the monarch as they enter the House of Lords. 👑 Royal Robes and Crown: The monarch wears the Robes of State and the Imperial State Crown, which are brought to the House of Lords in separate carriages. 📜 Reading of the Speech: The monarch reads the speech prepared by the government, outlining its legislative agenda. 👥 Hostage MP: As a precaution dating back to the English Civil War, an MP is held "hostage" at Buckingham Palace to ensure the monarch's safe return. Labour MP, Samantha Dixon holds this role. 🚫 Absence of the Sovereign in the Commons: Since King Charles I attempted to arrest five members of Parliament in 1642, no monarch has entered the House of Commons.
