โ๐๐ข๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐ข๐ง๐ฌ ๐๐ญ ๐๐โ. Well, in a way it kind of did for meโฆ. Back in January I turned 40, and my fiancรฉ arranged a surprise birthday party for me, inviting many of my close friends and family. Everyone had a great day/evening. Or so Iโm told, as I wasnโt really there, or at least woke up with very little memory of the event and the mother of all hangovers. And I was mega disappointed. But this isnโt a post about alcohol and excess, more about moderation, consistency and the introduction of a routine. I wanted to get more out of every day. ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐, Iโd have a beer, or quite a few beers, pretty much every weekend. ๐๐๐, I only drink occasionally, never to excess, and never after midnight (like Gizmo from Gremlins). ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐, I would go to bed and wake up at a different time each day, especially on a weekend. My sleep was awful and I would always wake up tired and groggy. ๐๐๐, I get up at the same time each day during the week and it only varies by an hour or so on the weekend. ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐, I would eat when I felt like it or had time, often skipping breakfast and snacking late at night. ๐๐๐, I always eat breakfast, I try to avoid ultra processed foods and donโt eat too late in the evening, minimising snacking but not cutting it out altogether โ moderation, remember? ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐, I lived a relatively sedentary lifestyle. Iโve been fortunate enough โ I think from my motherโs genes โ to not pile on weight despite a poor diet and minimal exercise. But I felt lethargic and unhealthy inside. ๐๐๐, I have a regular gym routine, often going with my colleague or my fiancรฉ, and Iโve managed to shed a bit of puppy fat and feel a million times better. Being active has impacted ALL of the above points too. ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐, I spent my weeknights watching TV. Ok, I still do that a bit. But ๐๐๐, I read books too. Mostly Michael Connelly โHarry Boschโ series. Love it. Donโt get me wrong, my life wasnโt terrible. Despite the lack of structure and routine, I was still managing to be effective in my job, Iโve spent months traveling the world, and I have a fantastic network of friend and family. But the ๐๐๐๐๐๐ of these changes have allowed me to get so much more out of life, my career included. My productivity has doubled on every level and I am more present for my family, friends and fiancรฉ. It feels great. Iโve had some great colleagues and managers past and present over the years that have given me all the above advice - Kate Davies Theadora Alexander Paul Genders Alex Smith Mike Lowery as well as my brother Martin Baker. Well, eventually I took it! OK, thatโs enough of that, back to recruitment and FMCG posts from tomorrow!
Love this post. Happy belated 40th. Itโs true that a bit of uplevelling in certain areas and some routine can do absolute wonders. Sounds like youโre smashing it.
We all get there eventually Andrew Baker! Very proud of you taking hold of your future health and happiness for yourself and for Lucie. Keep going and it will only get better!
I have to say this....... YOU'VE CHANGED! :)
YES Andy B - love this ๐ช
The importance of routine, being consistent and persistent is invaluable. All the best buddy.
