โ€œ๐‹๐ข๐Ÿ๐ž ๐›๐ž๐ ๐ข๐ง๐ฌ ๐š๐ญ ๐Ÿ’๐ŸŽโ€. Well, in a way it kind of did for meโ€ฆ. Back in January I turned 40, and my fiancรฉ arranged a surprise birthday party for me, inviting many of my close friends and family. Everyone had a great day/evening. Or so Iโ€™m told, as I wasnโ€™t really there, or at least woke up with very little memory of the event and the mother of all hangovers. And I was mega disappointed. But this isnโ€™t a post about alcohol and excess, more about moderation, consistency and the introduction of a routine. I wanted to get more out of every day. ๐๐„๐…๐Ž๐‘๐„, Iโ€™d have a beer, or quite a few beers, pretty much every weekend. ๐๐Ž๐–, I only drink occasionally, never to excess, and never after midnight (like Gizmo from Gremlins). ๐๐„๐…๐Ž๐‘๐„, I would go to bed and wake up at a different time each day, especially on a weekend. My sleep was awful and I would always wake up tired and groggy. ๐๐Ž๐–, I get up at the same time each day during the week and it only varies by an hour or so on the weekend. ๐๐„๐…๐Ž๐‘๐„, I would eat when I felt like it or had time, often skipping breakfast and snacking late at night. ๐๐Ž๐–, I always eat breakfast, I try to avoid ultra processed foods and donโ€™t eat too late in the evening, minimising snacking but not cutting it out altogether โ€“ moderation, remember? ๐๐„๐…๐Ž๐‘๐„, I lived a relatively sedentary lifestyle. Iโ€™ve been fortunate enough โ€“ I think from my motherโ€™s genes โ€“ to not pile on weight despite a poor diet and minimal exercise. But I felt lethargic and unhealthy inside. ๐๐Ž๐–, I have a regular gym routine, often going with my colleague or my fiancรฉ, and Iโ€™ve managed to shed a bit of puppy fat and feel a million times better. Being active has impacted ALL of the above points too. ๐๐„๐…๐Ž๐‘๐„, I spent my weeknights watching TV. Ok, I still do that a bit. But ๐๐Ž๐–, I read books too. Mostly Michael Connelly โ€œHarry Boschโ€ series. Love it. Donโ€™t get me wrong, my life wasnโ€™t terrible. Despite the lack of structure and routine, I was still managing to be effective in my job, Iโ€™ve spent months traveling the world, and I have a fantastic network of friend and family. But the ๐‘๐„๐’๐”๐‹๐“ of these changes have allowed me to get so much more out of life, my career included. My productivity has doubled on every level and I am more present for my family, friends and fiancรฉ. It feels great. Iโ€™ve had some great colleagues and managers past and present over the years that have given me all the above advice - Kate Davies Theadora Alexander Paul Genders Alex Smith Mike Lowery as well as my brother Martin Baker. Well, eventually I took it! OK, thatโ€™s enough of that, back to recruitment and FMCG posts from tomorrow!
