Our study reveals how inhalation of PCB 52 impacts the gut microbiome, providing new insights into environmental health. Looking forward to continuing this great work together! Highlights of the study are • Inhalation of PCB 52 in rats alters the taxonomic composition in the cecum and colon. • Most predicted changes at the enzyme levels occur in the jejunum and ileum. • Bacterial alterations correlate with the level of PCB found in the intestinal content throughout the GI tract. Congratulations to Dr. Quinn Kolar on publication of partial results from her negatively controlled randomized clinical trial evaluating what we are really treating when we select #clinical#mastitis treatments based on culture results. In this trial, we enrolled only non-severe cases that resulted in Gram-positive microbial growth using selective agar. Those cases were randomly assigned to 4 groups: 1. no treatment, 2. 3 days intramammary #polymast 3. 3 d intramammary #spectramastLC or 4. 8 d IMM spectramastLC. What we learned: 1. A large diversity of organisms grew on the Gram positive agar. Many were genera that are not listed on the product labels and for which there is no efficacy data relative to treatments. 2. Some cases that grew using on farm culture were culture negative in our university lab after going through a freeze thaw cycle. This probably matters because they likely had sparse microbial growth when detected which is often a predictor of spontaneous cure (no need for antibiotics). 3. While our sample size wasn't large enough to make definitive conclusions, our preliminary data about bacteriological cure indicated that longer treatment duration (or different drugs) didn't improve bacteriological cure... However - larger studies are needed. Thus study is Part 1 - stay tuned for the followup paper that describes clinical outcomes like culling, milk yield and SCC reduction!
