Incident detection and management can have an even more crucial impact in highway tunnels where low light conditions and smoke pose a real danger to traffic safety. German federal highway authority has selected our technology partner Citilog and 132 Axis Communications cameras integrated with automatic incident detection and deep learning software for the upgrade of Berlin’s inner-city highway tunnel video technology systems. This tailored-made video incident management solution, also in partnership with Siemens Berlin, covers Berlin’s highway network including eight tunnels. 🚦📷 How can we calibrate roadside Pan-Tilt-Zoom CCTV Cameras for automated repositioning to GPS coordinates for ATMS Applications? In our new paper, we develop a novel methodology designed for easy, scalable implementation on large camera networks. We use aerial imagery and visual landmarks to calibrate CCTV cameras, enabling them to target repositions using any input GPS coordinate. Our study compares this new Camera-to-GPS (C_2_GPS) technique with a previous implementation of camera-to-mile marker (C_2_MM) technique on 80 cameras in the Indianapolis Metropolitan Area, targeting responding Safety Service Patrol vehicles. Key Findings: * C_2_GPS can be positioned to any possible view using only a single GPS point, whereas C_2_MM is limited to predefined views. * C_2_MM techniques had a 54% accuracy, while C_2_GPS techniques have had an observed 89% accuracy. While C_2_MM techniques are more straightforward, the trade-off is in accuracy, recalibration time, and initial calibration time. C_2_GPS techniques offer greater overall accuracy, shorter recalibration times, and faster initial calibrations but require more complex services to run. Our methodology provides critical advantages over C_2_MM techniques while maintaining a simple geometric model for scalable implementation. This study benefits TMC operators with TIM-related tasks by monitoring, repositioning, and sending alerts for detected incidents and emergency vehicles using telematics and connected vehicle data.
