Empowering Black Excellence: The Intersection of Education and Philanthropy Deondra Rose, Ph.D.'s new book, The Power of Black Excellence: HBCUs and the Fight for American Democracy (Oxford University Press, 2024), and @mikebloomberg's transformative $600 million gift to HBCU medical schools spotlight the profound impact of investing in Black excellence. Dr. Rose, a distinguished scholar at #DukeUniversity, explores how HBCUs have served as vital incubators for Black Americans to acquire the knowledge, skills, and sense of community necessary to build successful careers and drive societal change. Her book is a call to action and a celebration of the incredible achievements of HBCUs and their students. Rep. Alma Adams, U.S. Representative, notes that this work "underscores the incredible history of HBCUs and the urgent need for a historic reinvestment to ensure their continued success." Bloomberg’s historic donation is a tangible commitment to this vision. By providing scholarships, enhancing facilities, and supporting faculty development, his gift addresses the financial and systemic challenges faced by HBCU medical schools. It’s an investment not only in Black medical students but also in the future of healthcare, aiming to increase the number of Black doctors and improve health outcomes for Black communities. As James E. AMDG This is absurd. If "black" students can't get into medical schools, then assigning funding to "black-only" medical schools is like giving drug dealers the ability to write scripts. This in no way is to suggest that "black" students are drug dealers. Rather, if we are to implement a single-payer healthcare system — which I promise to implement and fund — then incompetent medical students or schools would only sully the quality of care. Realize, as Bernie Sanders (Senator) does or says— healthcare is a human right. Attenuating race-driven policies is not. THE REPUBLIC CANNOT FALL. VOTE FOR PRESIDENT DONALD JOHN TRUMP. Finally, it is my belief, perhaps the modus operandi of The Republican Party, that government is only good for so much. Hence, here, we see Bloomberg interceding / intervening. That's why, in certain cases, the fortunate few (can there only be a few?) will secure food, shelter, clothing, healthcare, and education, something which both President Donald John Trump and I believe in, methinks.

✨History repeats itself, and its lessons are stark. The system's oppression of Black people is not a relic of the past, but a persistent reality. By dismantling DEI programs in medical schools, we're not just ignoring history—we're actively regressing. ✨These programs are vital tools for building equity and addressing the profound healthcare disparities that plague our nation, especially in the South. Mississippi's statistics are a damning indictment: 1.1 million Black residents served by a mere 660 Black physicians. This is not just a disparity; it's a crisis. Eliminating DEI initiatives is more than a misguided policy—it's an act of willful blindness to the systemic inequities that continue to cost Black lives. We cannot afford to take steps backward. The stakes are too high, the consequences too dire. ✨True progress demands that we confront our history honestly, learn from it ruthlessly, and act on those lessons relentlessly. Anything less is a betrayal of the principles of equality and justice that we claim to uphold. ✨The path forward is clear: we must not only preserve but strengthen our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in medicine. Our collective health—and our moral integrity—depend on it."

I had written about the importance of training more Black physicians who would spend more time caring for Black patients. There had always been obstacles to reach those goals but those obstacles have become more virulent lately. I have stated that we needed money from millionaires/billionaires of all ethnic backgrounds who see and understand the importance of increasing the pools of medical students and physicians in residency and fellowship training programs. The only efficient way to accomplish these goals successfully is by opening more medical schools and hospitals at HBCUs. HBCUs need financial support and land to build new buildings for these schools and hospitals. HBCUs also need to be able to hire physicians and PhDs to train these students. There are enough Black physicians and others who are ready to move away from schools and hospitals staffed predominantly by European American (EA) physicians in order to work at these future HBCU medical schools. Right now, descendants of Africans are spending too much time lamenting the dismantling of DEI programs. In retrospect, Black folks including physicians like myself and administrators might have gotten too comfortable with the very SMALL benefits of DEI activities. These programs were always the ones that got axed when there was a financial crunch. Many EA physicians and scientists were/are also very antagonistic to Black presence at “their” medical centers. So, everybody is now using performative defense when anti-Black activists and their accomplices are using aggressive offense to stop future Black physicians who are either in college, medical schools, or residency programs. Senior physicians are not immune from these destructive attacks, especially, if they are considered too successful. What are you going to do when they come for you? Opening new medical schools at HBCUs has advantages if money is provided to these schools instead of already wealthy medical centers that receive millions of dollars in private, state, and federal grants. For example, HBCU medical schools wouldn’t have to worry about the slashing of DEI programs just because politicians and others think that it is okay to attack Black folks with impunity. Black students and residents wouldn’t have to get hazed repeatedly by senior physicians because of differences in ethnicities__The hazing at PWIs leads Black physicians to lead a “paranoid” life style, knowing that there was nothing “delusional” about “them” actually being out to get “you”. Black patients would also benefit from being cared for by residents of similar ethnic backgrounds. Black students would also learn more about the high prevalence, treatment, and complications of diseases (prostate cancer, my family history and me) in Black patients. Black professors would have a larger audience for textbooks describing more fully the dermatological manifestations of many diseases. All Americans need to work together to counter the attacks of EA bullyonaires.

This is how to promote equity: by supporting businesses and institutions built by the same communities we are hoping to serve.

UNCF, the United Negro College Fund, known as the United Fund, is a philanthropic organization that funds scholarships for Black students and general scholarship funds for 37 private HBCUs. UNCF was incorporated on April 25, 1944, by Frederick D. Patterson, Mary McLeod Bethune, and others. UNCF is headquartered in DC. In 2005, UNCF supported approximately 65,000 students at over 900 colleges and universities with approximately $113 million in grants and scholarships. About 60% of these students are the first in their families to attend college, and 62% have annual family incomes of less than $25,000. UNCF administers over 450 named scholarships. UNCF’s president and chief executive officer is Michael Lomax. Past presidents of the UNCF included William H. Gray and Vernon Jordan. Though founded to address funding inequities in education resources for African Americans, UNCF-administered scholarships are open to all ethnicities; the great majority of recipients are still African-American. It provides scholarships to students attending its member colleges as well as to those going elsewhere. Graduates of UNCF member institutions and scholarships have included many Black people in the fields of business, politics, health care, and the arts. Some prominent UNCF alumni include Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.; Alexis Herman; Spike Lee; Samuel L. Jackson; General Chappie James; and Dr. David Satcher. UNCF adopted as its motto the maxim “A mind is a terrible thing to waste.” This maxim has become one of the most widely recognized slogans in advertising history. The motto was notably mangled in an address to the organization by VPOTUS Dan Quayle, who stated: “And you take the UNCF model that what a waste it is to lose one’s mind or not to have a mind is being very wasteful. How true that is.” The motto, which has been used in numerous award-winning UNCF ad campaigns, was created by Forest Long, of the advertising agency Young & Rubicam, in partnership with the Ad Council. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence
