🌈 Happy Pride! Do We Still Need It? 🌈 In recent times, we've witnessed a troubling rise in anti-LGBTQ+ sentiments around the world. This resurgence of discrimination and intolerance, not to mention that being LGBTQ+ is still illegal in many countries. This clearly underscores the critical importance of celebrating Pride. Pride is not just a celebration; it's a powerful statement of visibility and resistance. It provides a platform for the LGBTQ+ community to be seen and heard, challenging the prejudices and stereotypes that fuel discrimination. By coming together, we foster a culture of acceptance and inclusivity, demonstrating that love and equality are non-negotiable rights. Tomorrow is LGBTQ+ Elders Day, an important moment to celebrate the queer and trans elders whose visibility, advocacy, and everyday courage paved the advancement of LGBTQ+ rights nationwide. In recognition of the importance of our elders and how they serve as possibility models for our community, our May research focused on the impact of adult LGBTQ+ role models on LGBTQ+ young people. We found that 67% of LGBTQ+ young people report having at least one older LGBTQ+ adult role model in their lives. Why does this matter? Because having access to an older LGBTQ+ role model is associated with higher levels of self-reported life purpose amongst LGBTQ+ young people. Remember, life is cyclical. We advocate for queer and trans kids to become queer and trans adults — whose visibility will remind the next generation of LGBTQ+ youth that it’s okay to exist as you are. 📅 Today, 17th May, we recognize the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia (IDAHOBIT). 🤔 Did you know this date holds a special significance? In 1990, the World Health Organisation took a historic step by declassifying homosexuality as a mental illness. This decision marked a turning point in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights. It challenged outdated perceptions and paved the way for greater understanding and acceptance. While progress has been made, LGBTQ+ individuals still face discrimination and violence around the world. Here at Stanley & Davis, we believe in diverse and inclusive workplaces where everyone feels valued and respected. It was an honour to have Matt Cameron 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ of LGBT great speak at our Campaign LGBTQ+ event last night! Matt spoke to us about the incredible work he and his business are doing to promote LGBTQ+ inclusivity on a global scale in the financial services sector and what we could all do to promote LGBTQ+ inclusivity in our own work places. Here are my 3 key take aways: - Promote LGBTQ+ role models in your business - and help them to be visible internally and externally (if they are ok with this, of course) to help both people internally and those considering joining your organisation feel safe - The power of allyship is huge – when people from outside the LGBTQ+ community show active allyship and stand up for the rights of LGBTQ+ people visibly, its an extremely powerful tool to make our community feel safe, and make external candidates feel safer joining your business - Look for other businesses who are promoting LGBTQ+ inclusivity in the best way – and learn lessons from them on what you can do differently to promote inclusivity It was also incredible to be reunited with the team at Campaign, to see what we have achieved in 2023 and be reminded of where want to go and why!
