This week I was honored to receive the Woman Of The Year award at the World Retail Congress, sponsored by Altrua. The criteria, in Lucy Harris’s words, was to identify female leaders with remarkability, a global footprint and brands that were modern and relevant – all done through a meritocratic search. For me, this award stands as an ode to female entrepreneurship in its entirety and I’m humbled to be the recipient this year.   I started Unilever Prestige as a start-up within Unilever 11 years ago and I was convinced that I wanted to do things differently. I always believed that there was an opportunity to create a business unit that puts the authenticity of the brands at the center of the business model and is “future fit”. Our business model celebrates founders, people and culture. We believe in being a force for good for society and the planet and we invest in vocational training and education for experts and consumers in the Beauty and Wellbeing industry.   More than 80% of Unilever Prestige employees are women, and I’m so encouraged that we have great female representation at founder and CEO level, as well as in key functions across the business that have been perceived as traditionally male including finance, R&D and supply chain.   I’ve always been a supporter of women, and my role as chairwoman of the CEW UK allows me to do this at scale for the entire UK beauty industry. If we want to create gender parity on a bigger scale we need to support, mentor and promote each other and the great work that women do. It’s why awards like this one are so important.   If I had to give advice to women starting out on their journey, I would actually take the words that some of our brand founders shared about my leadership of the Unilever Prestige business: ⚡ Do not be afraid to stand out, and have courage to break the norm if you believe it will lead to something greater ⚡ Be comfortable with being uncomfortable – it’s only through bold moves and choices that the magic will happen ⚡ Have conviction and do not take no for an answer if what you are standing for matters ⚡ Radiate and share your knowledge, experience and advice with others   Truly grateful for this award and I remain committed to driving change for the next generation of all leaders.   #womeninbusiness #femaleleaders #beauty #retail #winninginbusiness #genderequality #womensupportingwomen  

CONNECT . SHARE . INSPIRE This week I had the privilege of attending a first of its kind, women's leadership conference. Six global businesses, Schneider Electric , BASF , Bosch , Bilfinger, Henkel , EQUANS and BOUYGUES UK, joined forces to invest in people, hosting 180+ of their female leaders with the goal of networking, inspiring, collaborating and tackling prominent topics surrounding Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Did you know only 15% of new CEO appointments are females. Approximately 900k women have left their roles due to a lack of support surrounding menopausal symptoms. Globally women make up only 22% of parliament. These are just a handful of staggering statistics that drove the passionate, forward thinking, and progressive leaders of these 6 brands to collaborate. The event "kicked-off" with a motivational talk from former professional footballer and boxer Stacey Copeland, her story of persistence and resilience, never taking "no" for an answer saw her achieve international success, but also opened the door for more talented young girls to pursue their sporting passions without judgement or barriers. Not only was I able to meet and network with so many talented women, the day was also full of thought provoking panel discussions, my key takeaways were; The importance of creating allyships in the workplace, male & female; Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone...success won't come looking for you; We have to lead with purpose & continue to challenge gender bias to impact change; Companies creating inclusive policies is only the starting point, without widespread adoption at all levels, supported by leadership, we will not realise a progressive workplace. The conference concluded with an inspirational talk from Griselda Togobo, if we are all a little braver, collectively what can we achieve? Speak up, challenge the status quo, champion your peers, embrace opportunity and remember we can be ambitious, powerful, successful, and still have humility. Reflecting on #internationalwomensday last Friday, Niki Ford's announcement to step down in July as CEO of Australian Organic Limited (AOL) is a reminder of the importance of women in leadership. Her journey as the first female CEO of Australian Organic Limited (AOL) stands as a beacon of progress. Why? Because leadership isn't just about guiding a team; it's about doing hard, bold and courageous things. It’s about embodying the change and innovation necessary for an industry's growth. Niki Ford's tenure embodied this, marked by dedication and a vision for a sustainable future, underscoring the indispensable role of women at the helm. Celebrating Women's History Month! 👩🌟 In March, we embrace #WomensHistoryMonth by paying tribute to the remarkable women within our leadership team, whose invaluable contributions have greatly enriched our organization. Today, we celebrate An Ho, our Director of Food Science and Product Innovation. 🔬👩🔬 We asked An a few questions about her role as a leader. ♦️ How do you cultivate a strong and supportive team culture? Mixing in some fun outings or activities helps with comradery. Also, being open with each other builds a strong bond. When we express times that we are stressed, others on the team willingly help and those types of things are strongly encouraged and exemplified with each other. ♦️ How do you stay focused and productive in the face of distractions and competing priorities? Rearranging my priorities regularly is important. Sometimes people get stuck on their list of things to do and don’t derail from them. That is an organized way of practice, but you can’t get stuck on that. Priorities get shifted and you have to use judgment on what takes precedence. Self-awareness is also important so that you know what strengths you have to accomplish certain priorities and what priorities are better suited for someone else to take on. ♦️ How do you approach decision-making and problem-solving as a leader? Getting the background information on the matter is key to makes a proper assessment. If I feel that my experience and knowledge pertain to the situation, then I would feel confident in providing a solution. I would weigh in potential outcomes to various choices that I have, but be timely about it.
