A rewarding experience - cooking for fellow volunteers and embracing challenges. Volunteering to prepare a three-course meal for 40 people in an unfamiliar kitchen with new friends was an exciting task. Despite not being a fan of cooking at home, I learnt some techniques over the time. It's true what they say - practice makes the master. The project provided a great exercise in team leadership and planning. But most importantly, giving makes you happy! 🍲👩🍳 #Volunteering #TeamLeadership #ProjectPlanning

How do you maximize employee engagement in your corporate volunteering programs? Groundswell was honored to co-host a panel last night with LA Community Leaders at United Talent Agency. Some awesome takeaways 👇 👉 Desiree Flores spoke about UTA's continued commitment to a single day of service, which serves as a stake in the ground across the agency that everyone can rally around. She added that they've already set their 2025 date and are already reaching out to division leaders to ensure that they have the lead time (and context around level of importance) to plan. 👉 Velma B. of US Venture talked about the importance of building relationships throughout their sprawling divisions, stressing that she aims to discover what issues or causes make specific leaders excited so that she can lean into that enthusiasm. She also added an inspiring tidbit about USV's philosophy on volunteering - anything counts in their $25 Dollars for Doers program. "You can mow your elderly neighbor's lawn, and our founders will pay you to do it." I found that approach particularly inspiring. 👉 Tony Wu noted that sweetgreen's challenges are actually an inverse of the norm - it's easier for them to engage their hourly retail workers in volunteerism than their corporate employees. He credited the store-level success to how Sweetgreen has baked social impact into their DNA, and giving back is simply an operating cost at the store level and in the launch process. There were a few things that they all agreed on. One was the need to engage the nonprofit partner in scoping a volunteer engagement that made sense for them and their operations. As a former nonprofit executive, it was really refreshing to hear them acknowledge that not every organization needs 50 people in matching shirts to show up, but that with enough exploration and dialogue, there's almost always an opportunity to find mutual alignment and value. A special shoutout to Rebecca Holliday, Groundswell's Head of Customer Success and Impact, for helping to pitch the panel and for moderating it last night. As an ethical, community minded and people first business, Community Matters Partnership (CMP) has been a great partnership for our business. Simon says it all in this video - but this is our experience... It is a simple cost versus value equation for us. The cost: 1. A relatively modest financial contribution annually. 2. Structuring the workplace to allow staff to take the time to give back. The value: 1. The sense of well being that comes from volunteering, whether that is spending the day working in a valued local resource like a community garden - or a day at the beach doing our bit for reducing micro-plastics. 2. Team building. On our last corporate volunteering day we had members of our management team working along side people doing work experience and newer team members too. A great opportunity to get our hands dirty and chat on a different level than is always possible in the workplace. 3. Meeting fantastic like minded businesses and people. People make the world go round. Through CMP we not only work along side some of our suppliers and customers (UK Connect Ltd and Signwrite Studios Ltd to name just two) but have also met people and great companies like Rob Molloy of ally and mo media. 4. CMP enables us to easily provide our teams the opportunity to get involved in local projects without us having to do all the planning and arranging. They take all the stress out, do the organising, risk assessments and even provide the tea and biscuits! This negates the time and cost involved of us organising this in house. 5. In addition to volunteering opportunities, CMP also organise some great events - such as the annual quiz night and Runway Challenge. 6. Marketing value - we go out and do something good - we also get to talk about it and the amazing other businesses involved with CMP 7. It makes Cre8tive Space a better place to work and helps us to attract like minded people to join our growing business. value 7 - cost 2! The team at CMP really do make our #CSR programme easier to manage, which makes providing our team with 4 paid volunteering days a year a piece of cake!
