“What worries me most about the proposals for legalized assisted suicide is their veneer of beneficence—the medical determination that for a given individual, suicide is reasonable or right. It is not about autonomy but about nondisabled people telling us what’s good for us. In the discussion that follows, I argue that choice is illusory in a context of pervasive inequality. One thing to consider in #disabilityadvocacy and #disabilityrights uis that we need to be able to validate different opinions. For example, it would be the issue of hearing aids. There are some people who don’t want people to be able to see that they wear them, which is why they want aids to be almost invisible. However, others say that disability is just a difference, not a disadvantage, and that people should be proud that they are disabled, not hide it. I think both viewpoints are valid, and we need to offer support to people where they are, so it’s a case of both and, not competing viewpoints, as we are not competing on whose #livedexperiences are more valid.
