I had a different post for today but this is more important…
In 2010, I was on the Vans Warped Tour as an intern. At one of the many after parties before a break in the tour, I was given a drink from someone I didn’t know well. That drink was laced with drugs and I was in and out of consciousness for the next 2 days.
I was very fortunate. I had friends look after me and I was able to be taken care of but it was terrifying and the prospect of what could have happened had the amazing men in one of the bands I knew well hadn’t been looking out for me are truly harrowing.
Last year’s reports from GDC had me pretty spooked. I don’t drink, I was hyper vigilant and I was very careful to keep an eye out for those who I felt responsible for. I was lucky.
Not everyone was. Being a female in game dev is hard enough and the reports of drugging and attempted assault shouldn’t be occurring. We shouldn’t be fighting for the ability to safely exist at the same sanctioned industry events our peers are and worse still not being taken seriously when these instances occur.
I’m honored to be invited to events, conventions, conferences, and speaking engagements but I am frustrated by the idea of one step forward two steps back for female equality in the work place.
So what can you do?
🙅🏻♀️Never Leave Drinks Unattended: Always keep your drink, regardless if it is alcoholic or not with you & in your sight. If you need to go to the bathroom or move tables, either finish your drink or take it with you. Leaving drinks unattended makes them vulnerable to tampering.
👀Watch Your Drink Being Made. If possible, watch the bartender or server make your drink. This ensures that nothing extra is added to your drink. Avoid accepting drinks from large, open containers like punch bowls or from others. Ideally, drink from freshly opened containers like cans.
🔒Use Drink Covers or Lids: If available, use drink covers or lids to prevent anyone from slipping anything into your drink. Some companies make disposable or reusable covers that fit over drinks and have a straw hole as the only opening. You can also makeshift your own with a cocktail napkin or coaster. I have definitely done this.
👯♀️Stick With Your Friends. Go to events with friends/ coworkers and agree to look out for each other. Don’t accept drinks from strangers or leave your friends alone, especially if they’re intoxicated.
🧠Know the Signs of Drugging: Be aware of the symptoms of being drugged. Dizziness, lightheadedness, confusion, or nausea, are all common. Keep an eye on your friends for these symptoms too. If you or a friend starts feeling strange or more intoxicated than expected, get to a safe place and seek medical help immediately.
📣Spread the word.
I’ll share a highlight from GDC later but this post feels more important and I always want to use this platform for educational content. Game dev mama wants you safe! 🖤
