Yesterday, together with my dear colleague Tim Meyerjürgens I had the honor to participate at a high-level event on offshore energy ‘Delivering offshore energy to all’ organized by the Belgian Presidency of the Council 2024 @eu2024be in Bruges. Here relevant offshore stakeholders, representatives from 27 EU national ministries and the European Commission met, addressing existing barriers and identifying opportunities for the development of offshore renewables and the connection to onshore consumption centres. It was an excellent opportunity to be able to share our insights and recommendations for financing, market design and supply chain for offshore grid infrastructure, which were outlined in our latest expert paper 'Unlocking the Potential of the North Seas', a collaboration with eleven TSOs from nine #NorthSea countries. As part of the Belgian Council Presidency, Minister Tinne Van der Straeten invited leading industry representatives together with the DGs of the 27 national energy ministries of the Member States to Bruges yesterday, where we discussed the next steps in advancing sustainable #energy #infrastructure, facilitating the international #Hydrogen trade and delivering #offshore renewable energy to all. The ambitious plan to install over 700 turbines in the Taiwan Strait by 2025 requires a hefty $20 billion investment. 🌍💰 When President Tsai Ing-wen was re-elected she underscored the commitment, outlining a roadmap for 15 GW capacity from 2026 to 2035. Exciting Subsea Cables news! 🚀 Four European countries are making big moves with a €3.5 billion subsea cable project to boost green energy! 🌍💡 Azerbaijan, Romania, Georgia, and Hungary signed a joint venture to bring renewable electricity from the South Caucasus straight to Europe. This massive Black Sea Energy subsea cable will power around 1 million homes, diversifying energy sources and hopefully lowering costs. Romania's grid operator Transelectrica, Azerbaijan's Azerenerji, Georgia's GSE, and Hungary's MVM are leading this project. It's expected to be completed in 3-4 years and will transform the Black Sea into a renewable energy hub, supported by a hefty €2.3 billion from the European Commission. Offshore wind technology recently celebrated 33 years since its first installation. Initially, offshore wind energy was a costly but promising alternative to fossil fuels due to high installation and operational costs. However, the competitive pressure caused by the general shift around 2015 on most markets from fixed feed-in tariffs to competitive auctions dramatically reduced these costs, making offshore wind a competitive energy source. The European Union has ambitious plans for offshore wind expansion in the North Sea, aiming for 350 GW of installed capacity by 2050, which could supply up to one-third of the EU's electricity needs. The UK is poised to achieve an even higher share of its electricity from offshore wind. Despite these advancements, significant challenges remain, including slow permitting processes, underdeveloped grid infrastructure, and supply chain bottlenecks. At the Danish Offshore Technology Conference 2024, Henrik Stiesdal, CTO and founder of Stiesdal, will explore these issues and propose potential solutions to facilitate the continued growth and integration of offshore wind energy in the North Sea region.
