These days it is all about how do we create for the best blend of flexibility and quality. All formats, distribution channels, aspect ratios, you name it, we need this for a media buy on CTV here, a social post in 1:1 here, a IG Ad in 9:16 over there. There are often pro's and cons to shooting for flexibility like this, but ultimately its about how do we create smart efficient production, that lives in what we call the "goldilocks zone." High Quality meets High Value. Often when shooting for multiple formats and not focusing on one, like 16:9 (Hoirzontal) or 9:16 (Vertical), you have to shoot a bit wider than you typically would to make sure there is a space to account for the extra vertical room, since usually 9:16 is secondary to the 16:9. (But not always) Whether we are creating for Skalawag Productions (Direct Brands) or Roll Cut Studios (Agencies) the approach is the same. So we often explore how to utilize that extra with frame repositioning, post zoom effects, to make the extra room feel part of the organic piece vs, just leaving it wide. We can help direct user focus to where we want it to be, and do things like match frames like in the initial frame here, to build worlds that that feature the same person but different aesthetics/characters. In this ad set for Home Chef's newer brand Tempo, we created a world where multiple characters have different vibes and personalities, but similar needs. I kind of liken that concept to shooting for multiple formats, ultimately you have to show the same things, but the frame makes for slightly different opportunities to use the aspect ratio difference to make it unique, but not so different that it doesn't fit in the universe.
