Be Deliberately Emergent – It’s a #GoFarther Friday A year ago, I was spent. While the funding slowdown impacted the business, my fatigue was really what was holding us back. Revenue lagged, and my energy was worse. 😳 For nine years, I spent every day, every week, every month, every year focused on building, growing and improving our Startup Selling Coaching Program. 🏃♂️ Relentless Forward Progress. That’s my mantra. ⛰ Karan Jain and NayaOne were one of our coaching clients, and over the summer, he asked me – “How do we get more Scott?” I laughed it off, and told him that I had a job with my business, that I was focused on running SalesQualia.  He persisted, so we set up custom engagement in which I was working with the team daily, listening to sales calls, running standups and pipeline reviews through the end of year. I kind of liked it – getting back into the day-to-day of leading a sales team and working on gnarly sales opps with the biggest banks & FIs in the world. 🙀 In fact, I had FOMO that all I could do was coach and review, not jump on the calls, run discovery, and lead the demos. In December, he asked me again – “How do we get more Scott?” I had a choice – I could keep to my deliberate strategy I set nearly a decade ago – focus on the coaching business. Find more ways to grow and scale it. Avoid work travel. Play it safe. Or I could look at the opportunity to be emergent, to deviate from my plan. I had to admit to myself and my wife, and to Karan, that I was having fun.  The team was stellar. The product was even better.  The size of the market opportunity was enormous, and damn, it would be fun to start over like the early days at Blend Labs back in 2013 and grow the company to become the industry standard. 🔥 Now taking in a primary role there, leading the GTM team, opening up the US market, and working as part of a superstar team every day has given me energy and enthusiasm again. 🔥 Yes, have a plan. Focus. Find a routine. Do the work.  But every once in a while, it’s worth listening to that little voice that tells you that maybe, just maybe, this new opportunity is worth taking. I’m glad I did. Ten years ago, I left my comfortable corporate job to oversee sales at a brand-new startup. They had no track record. No structure. Nothing. It was a risky move, but I was drawn to their passion and vision. In the beginning, it was challenging to build the systems from scratch. But with every obstacle we overcame, our team grew stronger. I learned the value of risk-taking, teamwork, and believing in oneself. Over time, I grew the sales team from 1 to 50 people. Revenue went from $0 to $20 million. Looking back, I wouldn't trade those experiences for anything. I discovered my true potential and unleashed my greatest possibilities. Now I help other growing businesses ($50-$150k per month) who want to get to 7 figures a month do the same. Embrace the uncertainty, embrace the challenges, and embrace the extraordinary. The rewards will far outweigh the risks.

I thought these two had a thoughtful dialogue that touched on some life, entrepreneurial and of course, insurance. Might enjoy it. Questions: 1. Andy said the current stat is 70% of "independent agencies" are actually part of a group of some sort. Not sure if 😞 or 🤢 or wtf is my feeling. I wonder, in their non-insurance life, do these same people also vote union and support pro-union politicians and policies? 2. Guaranteed profit sharing is a common group theme. Cool. The question that is never answerd: is this due to math(larger premium offsets more losses) or are these groups actually doing things to produce a better result? 3. Tough couple of minutes around carrier and control. I've heard and personally experienced several of those points. The question is then, why does distribution allow this control? Seems like large groups can deploy MGAs better? 3a. So many carriers need better combined ratios yet here we are. Why? I feel tired, but also proud: Timeline 2023 Founded Scalivo GmbH in February Hired 1st employee in April Hired employees 2-4 in September/November We are now 6 people in 3 countries Closed 14 deals out of 29 opportunities. No time to really focus on our own lead generation (go figure), so given the circumstances this is pretty decent. Revenue target slightly missed but within forecast corridor. We had some key learnings and we all grew a lot professionally. What does that mean? I don't know yet. I do know that I am very grateful to our customers and colleagues. Transparent communication, fairness and understanding. Some great successes. We got everything we could have hoped for and more. I am going to enjoy some time off with my family. In January we will look back and plan ahead as a company. And then I will probably do a bit more of a dive into our key learnings, if there is interest in that. The LavaReach team is expanding! 🌋 We went from having just the 3 co-founders to having a full time team of 10 within 8 months. Still bootstrapped, and this transition has been both exciting and anxiety inducing at the same time. Are we using capital efficiently enough? How do I transition from being a player to coach without sacrificing our current sales efficiency? How do we maintain a cohesive culture to keep everyone motivated and eyes on the prize? 💡 My biggest challenge is now letting go - anyone else experienced or relate to this fear? Would love your advice. I’ve been self sourcing and closing on my own since we started in September last year. Letting go means I get less control and visibility over the types of prospects we bring onto product demos. My plan is to set up some repetable operational systems to ensure things don’t break as we add headcount. Any tips? Are we still allowed to do #ThrowBackThursday? This one is special though. Had all the feelings this morning catching up w/ Tami McQueen at Kula (formerly Octane) nestled at the bottom of ATV ☕️ 🏢. Tami was one of the first people I met at SalesLoft when we were just ~15 employees. She lead and helped engineer one of the most creative and effective marketing strategies in the history of Atlanta startups. Our inbound SDRs were feasting, setting and completing upwards of 100 demos per month! 100 per month! Is there a team out there right now doing that? Btw this was pre-series a. Reflecting back, ATV wasn’t just a building, it was sanctuary. A home away from home. Everyone was excited to get to the office and help grow the company. SDR team scrums each morning with Sean Kester at 9:50am: - what did you do yesterday - what are you doing today - roadblocks A practice I still maintain to this day. SalesLoft was not a job. It was about being a part of vision that Kyle Porter and the leadership team were determined to manifest. It went something like this: 1. Change people’s lives ✅ 2. Give back to city ✅ 3. Achieve Unicorn status ✅
