🔬✨ Empowering Change with Science: SCIENCOON at the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) ✨🔬 In a world faced with complex challenges, a modern approach is paramount. The application of cutting-edge scientific knowledge is our beacon towards desirable solutions. But the question arises - how many solutions can we implement on this vast planet? Behind every stride in knowledge, technology, and invention, there is a workforce of dedicated individuals. One seemingly small yet profoundly significant challenge in our society is the consumption of unhealthy water. Water, an essential nutrient for body growth, cellular metabolism, industrial use, and agriculture, is abundant on our planet. Yet, clean, safe drinking water remains scarce in many remote areas. Tragically, numerous health risks lurk in the water from streams, lakes, reservoirs, tanks, and wells. Shockingly, over 180 million Nigerians lack access to clean water, and many diseases trace back to unclean water consumption. In response to this global challenge, SCIENCOON arose. SCIENCOON, a student science club born at the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), stands as a beacon of hope. We believe in the power of scientific methodologies to address the dilemmas facing humanity. We execute this vision through practical scientific experiments, advocating for science and technology among students, both in secondary and tertiary institutions, and via programs like outreach, webinars and lots more. Our latest endeavor was the "CLEAN WATER AND SANITATION" workshop held at FUTA's biochemistry laboratory. In this interactive event, we conducted scientific experiments on drinkable water samples collected from various sources. We assessed their pH levels, oxygen composition, and performed microbial analysis. Students from diverse faculties and fields of specialization at FUTA united in pursuit of a common goal, aligning with the sixth Sustainable Development Goal (SDG). Our workshop featured expert presentations, data analysis, games, interactive sessions, and entrepreneurial skill development. Our unwavering commitment to solving pressing human issues has not gone unnoticed. Esteemed educators like Olusola Elekofehinti and Babajide Milton Macaulay, Ph.D. were present to commend our students for their exceptional dedication. FUTA is committed to producing empowered students who can make a positive impact, and SCIENCOON is at the forefront of this mission. Led by the remarkable Giuliano Dragone, this course is a masterclass in biomanufacturing. I'm excited to implement the knowledge gained, especially in bioreactor engineering and upstream processing. A dead fish head, a tub of collagen and a bottle of chicken stock... While most days are never the same at DTU Learn for Life, this is definitely a standout moment so far! Coming from a business school, I find it so interesting learning about life sciences. I had no idea little enzymes held so much potential! Especially in converting waste streams - such as bones - to create new, valuable products. While the setting may differ, I see similar fundamental dilemmas emerging and dynamics at play within innovation, complex-problem solving and more specifically in how to commercialise new technologies. This underscores the importance of cross-disciplinary approaches between social and natural science. This intersection is where I love to be and to bring others along too. As part of the EMBA program at DTU Executive Education, our executive students are tasked with working on consultancy projects solving "real-life" strategic problems faced by "real" companies. One of our consultancy projects is with Tailorzyme Aps, it is particularly interesting as the CEO Lars Peter Andersen is also one of our EMBA students! (and a DTU chemical engineering alumni)! I had the pleasure of hearing about his company's unique enzyme solution and its many applications. (in particular the super high grade collagen supplement - where and when can I buy this age-defying product please??!!). Like many new tech ventures, his company is facing some strategic questions when it comes to growing and scaling. With his consultancy project team, they will explore together the various avenues and their implications using the tools and frameworks they have been introduced to in the EMBA program so far. Here's one of the hardest communication lessons for academic scientists wanting to break into the biotech industry... A paper. Is. Not. A. Result. A grant. Is. Not. A. Result. I know. It hurts to read it. The thing that all of your colleagues and university admin have said is the only thing that matters...it's not really a result. Does that make your academic work irrelevant? Absolutely not. What it does mean, is that you need to change what you're focusing on when communicating your value. 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲'𝘀 𝗮 𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗔𝗥𝗘 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀 -method you developed -intellectual property -infrastructure you built -device prototypes you invented -biological mechanisms you determined -operational improvements If you read the above and don't know what I'm talking about, it's ok. I can teach you how to translate your academic mindset into the above. You are valuable. You just need to learn to communicate in a way that people in the business world can understand.
