The smiles say it all! Thanks to Pursuit for sponsoring the Pavilion DFW Chapter dinner last night. This is where the magic happens in community---in person events that allow us to deepen our connections and relationships. New faces are only a stranger once. It's a safe place where you can be vulnerable. Let's face it being a GTM leader can be just as challenging as it's rewarding. Consider events like this a little bit of needed GTM therapy. It's okay to ask for help and discuss challenges. Generosity - members stepped up to help with passion projects, be a sounding board, and help make connections. Lots of laughter and non-business advice like the Hum toothbrush is gamification at it's best if you're struggling to get your kids to brush your teeth. Feedback like weekend events where family could participate or a masterclass on personal branding. And I would be remiss to not say thanks to my fellow co-chair Jeremy Painkin for co-moderating. Even our other fearless leader, Elizabeth McCalley, stopped by to say hi and network before she jetted to another dinner. “Drive for show, putt for dough” is the common phrase heard in golf circles. However, isn’t there usually at least one approach shot in between? I’m at the US Open at Pinehurst #2 this week. While this is not a work trip, I can’t help but see an analogy… As I watched round 1 in the beautiful sand hills of North Carolina, I saw how much emphasis was placed on the tee shot and keeping out of the natural terrain bounding the fairways. If a player successfully executed that golf maneuver, there was still the matter of getting onto the green - thus the approach shot(s). Often in business, we put a LOT of effort into the first meeting (think tee shot). Then, we finally get the meeting, execute it, and realize now we have to begin to deliver value to keep the conversation going and moving toward a successful business relationship. Those approach shots (next discussions) are critical and the outcome determines whether/how the green will be reached and ultimately the pin. Relatively few players were under par on day 1 at the US Open, as the difficulty of the course won over the hope and optimism present as each player was announced at the tee box. However, those who did succeed were keen to listen to the caddy about the shot which followed after the opening drive. No matter how that initial effort went, there was a next best action to be determined and advice to be taken.
