The debate is over! Interns who have great hands-on experiences like to tell everyone about it. In this video, Nolan, a WisDOT Civil Engineer and former intern, talks at a roundabout project on the State Highway 60 Roadway at Eagle Drive in Jackson, Wisconsin. It is just another day in the life of thousands of construction workers across the U.S. As a construction intern Nolan shared the value of watching something get built while being outside rather than sitting in the office all day. I love this quote: “Working this summer felt less of like a business and more of like a learning community. Everyone was willing to help me. Everyone was willing to teach me. I really enjoyed that and I felt like it would be a great way to spend the rest of my career.” He got to see different job sites and experience different things. He saw that as very valuable in assessing what he wanted to do with his future and chose WisDOT. Principles were most likely at the heart of the way the internship was constructed. So, add that to your punch list. I acknowledge WisDOT for designing a wonderful hands-on internship program and engineering this 2-minute video. They have cemented a positive impression on me and everyone who surveys their work. No need to go in circles in a roundabout. The debate is over. Hands-on experiences are valued by interns. P.S. A: One important skill that I learned during my internship is to always be ready for anything. Asking for more job exposure, so that I can learn more about a specific path in my major. A: I think the internship has equipped me well; not only applied knowledge from school but also learned how can contribute to communities through my career. What would it be if you could choose your dream job? Why? A: If I could choose a dream job, I will have my own construction company specializing in prefabricated homes. I want to provide affordable housing for communities that are less fortunate. Q: What is the best tip you can offer other international students trying to secure an internship? A: That being said, the best tipI can offer you, who are securing your internship is that. “Do not overestimate the competition and underestimate yourself. How did you find your internship here at Ruby-Collins? I found this internship through one of my friends who was an intern last year! Then I applied online and started the interview process. Why did you choose a major/internship in the construction industry? I have a passion for working on real and practical projects. There is a deep sense of pride and satisfaction that comes with building structures from seeing a project through conception to completion. What do you do outside of school for fun? I love reading books, traveling to new places, learning how to invest, and watching lots of movies. What is your favorite part of your internship so far? My favorite part of this internship is working in the trenchless division. Being involved in a tunneling project has always been one of my dreams. What was your childhood dream job? On 11th September 2024, I successfully completed my summer internship with #BrittainHadley. I would like to extend a special thanks to the incredible team at #BrittainHadley for their continuous support and guidance throughout the internship. During this time, I had the privilege of working on a variety of projects that allowed me to develop invaluable skills such as #problemsolving, #criticalthinking, #attentiontodetail, and #communicationskills. One of the most notable projects I contributed to involved replacing combustible cladding with non-combustible cladding on a seven-story building, and another project was carrying out repairs to a listed building, which I worked on from start to finish. I also carried out multiple site inspections across different locations to ensure that each project was progressing smoothly and met high standards. Writing detailed site reports was a key part of my role, allowing me to further develop strong communication and technical writing skills. Throughout my time at #BrittainHadley, I gained #projectmanagement, #teamwork, #communication and #siteinspection experience, enhancing my understanding of the construction process from inception to completion. Here’s what she shared: 🔹 About Phoebe: "I'm interning with the R&D department at the corporate office. I recently completed my second year at Georgia Tech, majoring in Civil Engineering. I’m also from Atlanta, Georgia." 🔹 Internship Experience at Schnabel: "My internship at Schnabel has been great! Everyone is kind and willing to share their knowledge. I’ve enjoyed visiting job sites, applying classroom knowledge, and working with fellow interns. I’ve been involved in micropile load tests at M&T Bank Stadium, job support for SOMOS and Eccles, and R&D projects like analyzing waterfront tiebacks, concrete maturity, and deflection of a hanging mast. This experience has been eye-opening and shaped my future career goals." 🔹 Most Important Lesson Learned: "The most important lesson I’ve learned so far is that it’s okay to ask questions or ask for help. I’m halfway through college, so I still have a lot to learn. Everyone at Schnabel is a great resource, and I need to take advantage of all the knowledge they have." 🔹 Free Time Fun: "I really enjoy being outside in the sun, whether hiking, running, or sitting in a park reading a book.
