After a bike ride in the suburbs of North Carolina, a 60-year-old woman suffered from severe headaches and ear pain. The doctors with whom she first consulted were unable to diagnose her properly despite a large rash on her neck. Next, she developed more serious symptoms—forgetfulness, cognitive issues, and even Bell’s palsy—that finally led other doctors to test her and diagnose her with Lyme disease. Lyme disease has been reported in all 50 states. This case shows the importance of doctors of areas traditionally considered to be “non-endemic” getting a better education on tick-borne diseases.
