The need for climate change education is compounded by a dual concern: Teachers in need of resources and training, and climate change’s impact on school attendance rates. UNICEF reports that approximately 1 billion students live in extremely high climate-risk areas, causing them to miss school altogether due to weather safety (Children’s Climate Risk Index). In the 2021 study, “Getting Schools Climate-Ready,” 47% of national curricula from 100 countries failed to reference climate change in any way. But is there hope? Yes! Did you know that over 40 million children's education is disrupted each year due to climate change and ecosystem degradation? The effects are compounded for historically marginalized and low-income communities. "Children and young people are disproportionately affected by the climate crisis, but also at the forefront of climate action" An excellent blog by Deepali Gupta that succinctly captures the growing recognition of education as a tool for climate action and the steps needed to create climate-smart education systems. Since COP 28 there has been an increase in consensus amongst policymakers that - 1. Climate change is disrupting education systems globally, but particularly in climate-vulnerable countries in the global south which have not contributed to the climate crisis 2. Climate education is a critical tool for climate action. Children need to be empowered with the knowledge and solutions to tackle future climate challenges. "We now need to see this political will, financing and collaboration for climate smart-education systems grow, to ensure all children are resilient to and protected throughout climate shocks." Climate change is threatening the right of nearly 1 billion children to quality, safe education globally! 📚 To address this threat, we've joined forces with the Green Climate Fund and the Global Partnership for Education to invest US$70 million in building climate-resilient schools in vulnerable nations. Building the Climate Resilience of Children and Communities through the Education Sector (BRACE) marks the first major investment of climate finance in the education sector and will be the world’s largest-ever investment in school climate resilience. This game-changing investment will support education systems in vulnerable countries to construct climate-resilient and green schools, integrate climate change in school curricula and provide early warning systems to schools 👏 "We know children are the most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, while being the least responsible for its causes. Climate education should be integrated into all subjects at all grade levels as soon as possible to help address the climate crisis, tackle the mental health challenges faced by youth, and promote the growth of the green economy.
