It's not uncommon for healthcare professionals from diverse backgrounds to encounter discrimination and microaggressions from colleagues and patients. As a healthcare professional, I've personally experienced this mistreatment based on my color, ethnicity, and religious affiliation. Sadly, this is still a pervasive issue that not only affects the well-being of healthcare professionals but also the quality of care provided to patients. Diversity should be celebrated and cherished in the medical field. Each individual brings a unique perspective and cultural understanding that can greatly enhance patient care. Discrimination and microaggressions undermine the confidence of healthcare professionals and create an unhealthy work environment. It's crucial for us to address these issues head-on and foster an inclusive and supportive workplace culture. It's important for everyone, regardless of their background, to empathize with those who face discrimination. By putting ourselves in their shoes, we can develop a deeper understanding of the negative impact it has on individuals and society as a whole. As healthcare professionals, we have a responsibility to advocate for change. Let us stand together, raise our voices, and create a future where discrimination and microaggressions have no place in the medical field. By embracing diversity and celebrating our differences, we can create an environment that nurtures innovation, compassion, and excellence in patient care. #DiversityInMedicine #InclusionMatters #embracedifferences #no_to_racism
"It can be unusual to find a GP from a diverse background who hasn't been affected by discrimination and microaggressions from colleagues as well as patients." Dr Aaliya Goyal is the Midland Faculty's first diverse Vice Chair, and a nationally elected member of RCGP's Council and Dr Onyi Okonkwo is Midland Faculty Honorary Secretary and an elected Faculty representative on Council. On 20th Feb 2024 the House of Commons Justice Committee heard evidence from: - Deborah Coles, Director of #INQUEST and Dr Richards, founder of the preventable deaths tracker - Roey Burdon, Founder of Coroners Court Support Service (CCSS) and Angela Geer CEO CCSS. In relation to prevention of future death reports Ms Coles expressed: - A properly conducted inquest can have important preventative potential. - #PFDreports have a public interest importance because they can inform improvements to public health and safety. - PFDs have been important in shining a light on systemic areas of concern and some have translated into policy change and reviews. - A challenge in relation to PFDs is that there is no oversight, monitoring or analysis of what action, or inaction follows PFDs and their implementation so there is an accountability gap. - There is a postcode lottery in the #PFD system. - One of the values of PFDs should be learning at national, not just local level. - The mechanisms proposed is for a public body to collate, analyse and follow up and make public what has happened to PFDs and recommendations that come from post-death processes. Dr Richards explained: - She has created a tracker to turn coronial information into useful data that provides statistics, including the number of PFDs published every year and which #coroners and coronial areas are writing PFDs to give an indication of geographical variation. - There is a need for far greater analysis, dissemination, and action in response to PFDs. - There is no local or national approach to addressing PFDs formally or systemically. - Research shows coroners repeatedly raise the same concerns. - PFDs need a national oversight mechanism. Ms Geer giving evidence about the CCSS, described: - The CCSS is “…probably one of the country’s best-kept secrets”. - It covers 44 coronial areas, in 49 courts. - It is the CCSS’s aspiration to be in all coroners courts in E&W. - Bereaved families talk about being present at an inquest as the 3rd worst day of their lives. The 1stworst day is the death; the 2nd the funeral and the 3rd relieving everything. - A national helpline complements the at court service and takes both national and international calls. The international element concerns deaths overseas, repatriation and other inquiries.

Case Update - Biria v Biria [2024] EWHC 121 (Ch) - 95 year old client makes will during dementia-related OPG proceedings. ✅ Medical concerns raised (ref: dementia and OPG); but ❌ Golden Rule not followed. Retrospective capacity assessment finds Mr Biria lacked testamentary capacity. The case is pretty damning, the person preparing the will may or may not have been fully conversant with the rules around capacity. More could have been done to protect Mr Biria, his family and his wishes. Want to save conjecture and the cost of a retrospective capacity assessment? Capacity Vault is the service for you. #dementiaawareness #mentalcapacity #testamentarycapacity https://lnkd.in/ekZjCauZ

My 98 year old grandmother has severe macular degeneration and, due to her appointments being cancelled during lockdown (necessary and unavoidable) speeding up her sight loss, now has about 2% vision. She raised five children by herself, one of whom lost their sight in one eye due to hereditary retinoblastoma. She has always been fiercely independent so losing her sight has been confining, debilitating and terrifying for her. Sight impairment and loss is a widespread issue with someone in the UK being told they are losing their sight every 6 minutes. This doesn’t just impact the individual but their family and friends too. My own grandmother does as much as she is able to but no longer lives alone since she is unable to live a normal life without assistance. Over 2 million people live with sight loss in the UK and around 340,000 of these are registered blind or partially sighted. Current figures suggest that 1 in 25 people living in the UK will be sight impaired by 2030. Making sure simple things like wheelie bins are not left in the middle of pavements can make a big difference to people who aren’t able to see them and wouldn’t expect to walk into an obstacle in the middle of a path. It allows them to feel a little safer when out and about, helps them feel more independent, and empowers them to feel like they are able to go out, all of which can reduce loneliness and social isolation. Well done RNIB for addressing such a ridiculous, ignorant post. #sightloss #accessibility #RNIB #disability #inclusion #edi

Don't mess with the RNIB 💅 (Context: this was on a little video we posted about moving your wheelie bins off the pavement so blind and partially sighted people don't walk into them) [Image description: A Facebook comment thread. Steve says: More pandering to tiny minority groups that've survived just fine & without assistance for thousands of years, regardless of where people left their fkn bins... when will this madness end?! RNIB replies: Thank you for commenting, Steve. Just a few things to address. "Tiny minority" - there are 2 million people in the UK living with sight loss. "Survived just fine and without assistance" - blind and partially sighted people have fought for the right to education, information, health care and access throughout history/ "Thousands of years" - the wheelie bin was invented in 1968. James adds: Steve got owned.]

Fascinating webinar by Dr Curtis Offiah as part of the #IFAS autumn lectures today. Radiology’s role in the investigation and identification of strangulation offences. All in the name of taking a multi agency approach to optimising the identification of women (although not exclusively) at risk of escalation to serious harm and death. Excellent to see a detailed and intelligent approach to treatment, medical evidence opportunities and challenges for both health and CJ, along with risk identification. From an investigation perspective, having the support of IFAS and specialists like Dr Offiah involved in the initial stages of a NFS case could be imperative at not only proving the lead offence, but also longer term abuse in incidents not reported. With the central objective of working collaboratively to proactively drive down opportunities for harm to perpetuate, and support families to break the cycle of violence. #NFS #harmreduction #vawg #tvp #IFAS #NFS #publichealthapproach #partnershipworking #multiagency @curtisoffiah

Transformational leadership, team and business coaching, Networking, Promotion, Mentoring - FAST genuine results for you and your team building confidence, communication skills, resilience and strategies to success.
When it comes to answering the question "What do you do?" It gets complicated*! In a week I could be coaching a client to excel on the stage. Helping someone get over their fear of networking and that elevator pitch. Training business owners on no cost marketing. Networking via my confidential mastermind group and sharing leads that lead to hundreds of thousands of pounds of new business. I could be helping someone set up a blog or write their first book and get a publisher to take them seriously. I could be working with a really stressed out team who have stupid deadlines right now and are working silly hours, so they work less and get more done with less stress. I could be talking about overwhelm or I could be talking about how to be confident. Or I could be email coaching on one of my 14 courses. So, what do I do? *To say it's an honour to work with Julia is an understatement. Her dedication to her customers, mission and business are unparalleled. Watch this space as Julia is doing amazing things...I'm just the cheerleader! Well, let's just say it doesn't fit on a business card! So I mostly go by Author, Mentor and Cheerleader - and as I heard said many times today, kick butter - not sure I'm putting that on a business card! What do you do?
Many thanks to #FrenkelToppingGroup for giving me the opportunity to share my story. Thanks to my financial settlement I have an index linked income for the rest of my life, giving me opportunities others less fortunate can only dream of. Richard Fraser negotiated my settlement thanks to my late father Bryan Wingfield for negotiating on my behalf. Thank you Pa, willl always be indebted to you. My journey continues, thanks to the amazing team at #NationalSpinalInjuriesCentre at Stoke Mandeville. International nurses day past me by, but I would particularly like to thank my surgeon Rebecca Shirley for putting me back together, Emil MOGA in SPOP for looking after me, Dr Jane Duff, Sally Reffold, Jane Stanbridge & Ali Jamous I wouldn't be here without you. Goes without saying Mandie Holgate deserves a medal for putting in the hours. Thanks also to Stephanie Webster and Alison Taylor for challenging me to stand out in the crowd

To maximise potential of preventative and proactive agendas Rehab has to be prioritised.
The best campaigns change more than policy and use more than the best communications, AI, strategy and content. Health and rehab campaigning by day...non-Exec Director disability sports and theatre charities by night.
Today we emphasised the critical role of rehab to Lord Darzi and the upcoming review. We may not say the word, but we all know it’s the answer. #RightToRehab
