I recently coached at a women's conference and heard about the "standing room only" crowd for a session on imposter syndrome. I wasn't surprised. Many of my clients want to work on confidence and experience imposter syndrome. I talk about it in my executive presence course too. I wanted to share an article forwarded to me by another L&D specialist in case it might help leaders dealing with imposter syndrome. This article does a few things. First, it validates imposter syndrome as normal. Even highly successful people have it at some point. Second, it tells stories of people who faced this and still found success despite how they felt. “Allow yourself to be silently drawn by the strange pull of what you really love.” These words by Rumi have resonated deeply in my second year of doctoral studies at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. As we navigate the strange and unexpected waters of this time, I find grounding in walking in my purpose – and following the pull of what I really love. Grateful for powerful coursework on participatory action research for educational justice led by Dr. Gretchen Brion-Meisels with Ron Grady and Hania Mariën, and school, family, and community partnerships, led by Dr. Karen Mapp with Esther Chong Weathers, Anri Wheeler, and Christan Shelton. Energized by brilliant and amazing young people and passionate and dedicated family engagement conveners working to center youth and family voice and agency in leadership and decision making. Reminded of the importance of leadership by listening, intentional trust and relationship building, proximate leadership, and collaborative action. As a community organizer, I believe in the power of human agency. When we believe that our choices matter, it releases fresh energy for transformation. And I’m learning to trust and lean into relationships – that we change, learn, heal, and grow in relationship. It’s been inspiring to see the power of collaborative action – with communities coming together to create the conditions for young people and families to thrive. A wise friend recently shared an insight “Follow the Juice.” What makes you feel energized and alive? When you are on fire, what kind of work are you doing? What is your north star – or southern cross - that lights the way forward and helps you to navigate strange and unexpected waters? Who supports you to walk in your purpose and follow your unique path? Where are you finding community and connection – to nurture your and others’ light and realize hopes and dreams?
