🌿 Kings Mountain National Monument Internship Now Hiring🌿 Position Responsibilities: 🌱 Control Invasive and Exotic Plants: Utilize integrated pest management techniques to manage and control unwanted vegetation. 🛠️ Supply Management: Gather and transport supplies, including PPE, chemicals, tools, maps, and GPS equipment. 🚜 Travel and Application: Move to treatment sites via truck, UTV, or on foot, apply management techniques, and accurately document work such as the number of plants treated and chemicals used. 🌿 Manual Vegetation Management: Cut and pile plant materials, apply pesticides as necessary, and transport cut materials. Balance vegetation removal to protect critical ecological areas, riparian corridors, and wildlife habitats. 🦺 Safety Procedures: Apply backcountry safety and emergency procedures. 🌾 Native Plant Restoration: Assist with native plant restoration activities and cultural landscape enhancement. 📋 Field Documentation: Identify and document native plant habitats, make field observations, determine the causes of any problems, and suggest mitigation measures. 🌻 Planting and Controlling: Plant native species and control invasive vegetation using hand and power tools. 🔍 Project Development: Contribute to site restoration project development by identifying areas for improvement, scoping work, and developing maps and graphics. 🔥 Prescribed Fire Preparation: Assist with preparing burn units for prescribed fire activities. 🌲 Species Identification: Identify species to treat with prescribed fire in accordance with the fire management plan. 🌳 Woody Material Management: Cut and pile woody materials to enhance prescribed fire. Work under the guidance of a wildland fire management specialist. 🗺️ GIS Mapping: Contribute to GIS mapping and data collection for documenting prescribed fire ecology. Meet Kylie Abouzeid, Environmental Analyst III our MassDOT Spotlight Employee this week! “I started with MassDOT in May 2022 as an Environmental Co-op in the Wetlands department. During my time as a co-op, I worked in both the Wetlands Unit and the Wildlife and Endangered Species Unit which are my two big passions. Learning about the different departments allowed me to determine what I was really drawn to and gain experience interpreting the complex regulations. I started full-time as an Environmental Analyst I in December 2022 and I have been promoted to Environmental Analyst III in April 2024. The scope of my job is ensuring that all projects that are in the design stages across Massachusetts receive the necessary permitting and clearances from regulatory agencies which protect Wetlands and Water Resources (including MassDEP, US Army Corps of Engineers, US Coast Guard, Coastal Zone Management). I have been lucky enough to work on the Cape Cod Bridges project and additionally I have enjoyed working on all projects that require US Coast Guard permitting because it is such a comprehensive process. Our team has been working on permitting twice as many projects this federal fiscal year as we did last year. One of my favorite things is when there are projects that are proposed in our hometowns, and it is so amazing how we get to watch them evolve.
