The African wild dogs or African painted dogs have a colorful coat with patches of yellow, black, and white, giving them a unique and striking appearance. They live in packs with a well-defined social hierarchy. Each pack has an alpha pair that leads. Known for their cooperative hunting style, wild dogs work together to pursue and take down prey. They have a high success rate in hunting. They use vocalizations, including distinctive sounds such as twittering and chirping. African wild dogs are listed as endangered due to habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and diseases like canine distemper and rabies. We are actively working to protect and conserve African wild dogs, focusing on habitat preservation and community education. NOAA provides a search engine to look up listings of species that are protected under the Endangered Species Act and the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Give it try and let me know what you learn that you didn't know yesterday. My research focuses on these two species. Humpback whales in the North Atlantic are no longer listed. That means the population (or "stock") has recovered to numbers that mean they are surviving long enough to keep the population growing! Killer whales in the Gulf of Mexico and waters around Puerto Rico are not listed. These groups do not have enough research that has been done to understand how many there are in this area. Keep an eye out for opportunities join me as part of my research team as a university internship or a citizen scientist and support protecting whales, dolphins, and the flora and fauna within their ecological niches in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea. Elephant herds are matriarchal, led by the oldest and most experienced female, known as the matriarch. The herd typically consists of related females and their offspring. Elephants in parks move for various reasons, including seasonal changes, availability of water and food resources, and social interactions. Ever tried juggling two important tasks at once? That's exactly what I was up to in Sagalla,Kajire contributing to a human-elephant coexistence project while interning at Save the Elephants. While multitasking can be a superpower, it also comes with challenges.In this case I was helping measure out an are for a Human Elephants coexistence combined fence while taking photos of those who were involved in the same.Well I managed to capture some photos and I also learned a valuable lesson about camera settings affecting image quality. (We've all been there!).It happened that I clicked a certain setting on the camera and the photos I took after that were not all good.🥲 Do we still think women are better multitaskers?😅 The bigger takeaway? In complex fields like wildlife conservation, focusing on one task at a time is crucial. Whether it's meticulous data collection or careful planning, prioritizing single actions ensures accuracy and effectiveness. This experience highlighted the importance of both: Multitasking efficiently: When planned strategically, multitasking can be a valuable skill. Focused execution: In wildlife conservation, prioritizing one task at a time is vital for success. The Human-Elephant Conflict (HEC) is a major threat to both the inhabitants & elephant populations. As human settlements expand into elephant habitats, disputes over resources emerge, resulting in property damage, crop raiding & sadly, casualties on both sides, this Elephant Conservation Project is at the forefront of efforts to reduce the HEC using data-driven techniques & community engagement, as an intern, you'll work with a committed team of researchers & conservationists, traveling through deep jungles & large tea estates, gathering critical data about elephant movements, behaviour & interactions with humans. Solving elephant behaviour & ecology issues using techniques such as GPS monitoring, video traps & behavioural observations. This data is more than simply numbers on a spreadsheet; it is essential for understanding the HEC's complex dynamics & developing successful dispute resolution strategies. But our conservation activities go beyond data collection. The skills you'll learn during this internship will serve as a springboard for a future career in conservation. From field research methodologies to community involvement initiatives, you'll gain vital skills & hands-on experience that will help you & your CV stand out in the competitive world of conservation.
