This is why ACHA's LGBTQIA+ Health Coalition advocates for culturally competent services, supports LGBTQIA+ students and professionals, and shares best practices to enhance care. Whoa! My first podcast!! Thanks CCA for the opportunity to share my favorite topic, universal design and how it can benefit all students, not just a few. Controversial thought, educators disable students, not just those with disabilities, but all students, by building in unnecessary barriers into their curriculum. Why not build a more inclusive curriculum to actually provide students opportunity to demonstrate what they know, rather than penalizing them for what they can't control? As we consider the importance of admissions, retention and graduation we may need to rethink barriers that serve no educational purpose.
The National Center for Education Statistics published that 21% of college students report having a disability, often with higher numbers among historically underrepresented groups. This rejection highlights the persistent barriers that continue to exist in academia, where misconceptions about disability still influence decisions. Such actions are not just a missed opportunity for the individual but for the academic community as a whole. This individual remains undeterred, viewing this experience as a catalyst for change. They are deeply committed to advocating for greater accessibility and inclusion, challenging outdated perceptions that equate disability with limitation. Their work and passion continue to contribute significantly to their field, proving that talent and dedication are not defined by physical or cognitive differences. Their story serves as a reminder that higher education and professional environments must evolve to embrace diversity in all its forms. Inclusion in education is crucial for building a fair society. The image presents four different approaches to education: Exclusion: This occurs when children with disabilities are completely left out of the education system, often due to accessibility to schools, discrimination, stigmatization, insecurity, etc. Segregation: This involves a separate group for those with disabilities, kept distinct from others. This is characterized by special schools and the promotion of the medical model of disability. This approach separates children from their parents and therefore increases vulnerability to abuse and neglect. Integration: Both groups are together, but they have limited interaction. I am a product of an Integrated school and I never liked it. In integrated schools, children with disabilities are included in regular classrooms without considering the accessibility needs of the child and learning styles. One of the "complaints" I have encountered from school heads is, 'It's expensive'. Inclusion: this is where all students learn in the same schools in their communities regardless of their disability, gender, or economic background. In an inclusive school, a teacher can adapt his or her methods both of instruction and classroom management – to tailor instruction to students’ different capabilities and needs. True inclusion is about breaking down barriers and ensuring that everyone, regardless of ability, is valued, involved, and empowered.
