A KEY LESSON for all healthcare universities to develop a supportive framework for clinical practitioners to. academics! Just read a fantastic paper by Dr Sharon Black on experiences of early career academics from registered health and social care professions that found, 'A lack of preparedness for the role as a new academic contribute to perceptions of a higher workload'. Hope @deansofcouncil takes this as debate in future meets! https://lnkd.in/esanQctQ

What can funders, academic institutions, and others do to ensure that the academic health sciences are as inclusive as possible? Here are three specific strategies that can advance equity in academic health sciences: 1. Develop funding sources that reward diversity, data transparency 2. Establish communities of practice that strengthen scholar networks and hold leaders accountable 3. Offer public-facing searchable dashboards with disaggregated metrics on enrollment, retention, graduation, and racial and ethnic diversity efforts With good data, committed leadership, and sufficient funding, academic institutions can achieve their goals of being welcoming, diverse campuses that offer everyone equal opportunities. How do students perceive the value in assessments? Research by Dr Jess Gurney with students on the MSc Clinical Education programme at Edinburgh Medical School offers five key take-away messages to guide educators in our assessment and feedback work: 1. Assessment instructions and rubrics should be as jargon-free as possible to outline the expectations to students who may not have a shared understanding of the academic terminology. 2. If using exemplars, these need to be supported by a brief outline of what the students are expected to take from it, for example, whether they displayed strong academic writing or critical use of literature. 3. Support expectancy of assessment by welcoming conversations surrounding the upcoming assessments. This is of particular importance for students who have little familiarity with the assessment format. Additional proactive support for these students may be beneficial to ensure they are clear on the expectations of the assessments. 4. Feedback is an opportunity to help provide clarity in expectations for future assessments, and the feedback given should incorporate this (feed-forward). 5. In conversations surrounding value in assessment, the importance of transparency and expectancy cannot be overlooked.
