Fall semester officially started Monday of this week, making today the third day of classes. Early this morning, I read an email from a student explaining they are fleeing a domestic violence relationship that is going to require them to find a new place to live. Because of this, they requested an extension on the quiz this week. Trauma-informed & victim-centric professors know that the quiz was the least of my worries. What is the priority at this moment?! My students safety. I responded by thanking them for trusting me with this information, connected them with our Crime Victim Services office & let them know that we have emergency housing, emergency financial assistance, & an on-campus pantry that can provide both food, toiletries, period products, baby/children supplies & clothing. A professor who chooses not to be trauma-informed & victim-centric will question why she decided to leave the first week of classes - failing to acknowledge that victims are ALWAYS the expert of their safety & will know when it is the SAFEST time for them to leave. They will also fail to be knowledgeable about campus & community resources. A call to all of my professor colleagues - when is the last time you attended a trauma-informed & victim-centric training?! When is the last time you took a moment to learn about the advocacy & support services your campus has so you can prove to be a trusting professor?! Schools are experiencing an ongoing nationwide school counselor shortage. Forty-eight states are above the recommended students to school counselor ratio of 250:1, with the current ratio being closer to 400:1. April is testing month in schools across Arizona. Test anxiety could affect any student, especially when they are under stress from frequent testing. Some youth may experience anxiety or stress due to altered schedules at school. More and more educators are truly seeking to go back to punishing families for not attending school. The problem that exists is deeper than just getting up and going to school, it’s problem that we must face and solve with innovative solutions. Having a tier solution is better than going straight to the court system but prevention measures and interventions must be revolutionary now. What is even worse we have noticed that the by products of vicarious trauma from adults are restricting access for students to have joy in school. A mindset that feels that “well I didn’t have fun in school why should they, or we need to bring back paddles and sending kids to juvenile for missing school with no positive interventions will lead to more damage” Many of our schools are over “meeting” thinking that strategy will solve the problem. Let’s think outside the box!

Upon the review of multiple school violence and mass killings beginning from 1887. There's one thing in common with them all. "They gained access to the property." Jw School & Campus Security was one of my concetrations for my Bachelors degree along with 4 other areas. One of the best parts of that education was the focus on mental health and other strategies in that environment that can be used to create and maintain safe places for our children to learn. However, even after all these years the conversation actually hasn't changed. A matter of fact, for many years it was muddied by people just throwing ideas out looking to make money out of a tragedy. These people didn't go study the issue. They just started creating self diagnosed responses. That to this day, doesn't seem to be so effective and in some cases costing school districts huge amounts of money for little to no solution provided. This event, captured on footage released by the Jeonbuk Teachers' Union, shows a student slapping, swinging a backpack, and hurling profanities at the vice-principal, who responded with passive restraint rather than self-defense. This alarming behavior not only raises questions about the increasing instances of violence in schools but also underscores the challenging position educators find themselves in. The fact that a young student felt empowered to act violently and disrespectfully toward an authority figure is troubling and demands attention. On the other hand, educators are navigating an increasingly litigious landscape where their actions are constantly scrutinized. I think this situation calls for a balanced approach to school discipline and the protection of educators. There needs to be clear guidelines and support systems in place that allow teachers to maintain authority and ensure safety without the looming fear of legal consequences. For this one child alone, a whole host of intervention strategies need to be activated to start addressing the root causes of such violent behavior: 🌈 School Counseling services 🌈 Designing early intervention programs 🌈 Advice from Mental health professionals if necessary 🌈 Collaborative effort between parents, teachers and administrators. And that's just for the child. The teacher will also need a support system to be in place. Education is not easy.
