We are thrilled to announce the establishment of La Cristalina Reserve, a stunning 656-acre tropical rainforest in northwestern Colombia’s Alto Sinú region! La Cristalina is particularly special as it hosts the first-ever recorded Crested Eagle nest in Colombia, a discovery that played a key role in the reserve’s creation. This majestic bird, listed as Near Threatened, is rarely seen, making this protected habitat even more important. 🦅 La Cristalina was established earlier this year by ABC partner Sociedad Ornitológica de Córdoba (SOC) with support from direct investment funds of the Conserva Aves initiative and other generous ABC donors. Conserva Aves is a regional initiative to create and expand subnational protected areas in Latin America. It is led by ABC, National Audubon Society, BirdLife International, Birds Canada, and RedLAC with support from Bezos Earth Fund. Want more Crested Eagles in your life? Check out our live camera (linked in the article below) that was produced in partnership with Rainforest Expeditions, streaming a Crested Eagle nest near Tambopata National Reserve in Peru's Amazon rainforest! 🪹 Whether in-person or through the wonder of the internet, we hope you enjoy experiencing these magnificent birds up close and join us in celebrating the preservation of their rainforest home!🌿 https://bit.ly/4ecHsGl #RNLaCristalina #LaCristalinaReserve #CrestedEagle #BirdConservation #CrestedEagleCam #ConservaAves #TerritoriosDeVidaColombia #SociedadOrnitológicaDeCórdoba #TambopataNationalReserve

Being a good neighbor sometimes takes compromise — especially if you’re an eagle! Our Bird of the Week, the Crested Eagle, shares a habitat with the mighty Harpy Eagle. You might think these large forest raptors would clash over food and territory, but the species have evolved a strategy for coexisting despite their differences… and even their similarities. 🤝 🍽️Crested and Harpy Eagles co-exist by specializing in different prey types. Generally, the Crested Eagle feeds on smaller and more diverse prey than the Harpy Eagle, mainly snakes, small primates, and birds. The Harpy Eagle captures more sizeable prey, including sloths and larger primates. 🦥 A researcher once even observed a female Crested Eagle bringing food to a Harpy Eagle fledgling at its nest! Talk about a good neighbor! 🏘️ Crested Eagles require large areas of forest with big, healthy trees. ABC and Colombian partner Sociedad Ornitológica de Córdoba recently purchased land to create La Cristalina Reserve, where they’d located the first Crested Eagle nest ever recorded in Colombia in 2021. 🪹 ABC continues to support the development of tourism infrastructure at La Cristalina. 🏕️ Visit ABC’s Bird Library to learn more! 📚https://lnkd.in/gqrR2ar2 #CrestedEagle #BirdOfTheWeek #HarpyEagle #LaCristalina #ReservaLaCristalina #SOC #SociedadOrnitológicadeCórdoba #ABCbirding #RainforestExpeditions

The Northern White Rhinos are almost extinct, except for two remaining. Wildlife Ranger James Mwenda in this photo with Najin, one of the last two northern white rhinos on Earth. Najin and Fatu live at Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya. The last male, Sudan, is now dead, but a multi-million dollar IVF program to save the species is underway. James was named Wildlife Ranger of the Year and is now one of the best wildlife guides you can find. He will soon be searching for the only black leopard in East Africa and opening new school projects. It is hopefully not too late for these species. More than 99% of all species that ever lived on Earth, amounting to over five billion species, are estimated to now be extinct. It is estimated that another 1 million+ species will be lost by 2050. The results are described as "terrifying" by Chris Thomas, Professor of Conservation Biology at Leeds University, who is lead author of the research from four continents published in the magazine Nature. MORE CINEREOUS VULTURES FOR BULGARIA Six new cinereous vultures have arrived in the Rhodope Mountains in #Bulgaria 🇧🇬, marking another important step in the Rewilding Rhodopes team's efforts to help the species' return to the region! 🦅 Transported from GREFA. Grupo de Rehabilitación de la Fauna Autóctona y su Hábitat in Spain 🇪🇸, the birds are now settling into the aviary where they’ll adapt to their new environment. In spring 2025, this group will be released into the wild to join the vultures already reintroduced over the past two years. The long-term goal is to establish a thriving colony of these majestic birds in Bulgaria. The first group of cinereous vultures in the Rhodope Mountains arrived in 2022 and now a total of 16 birds are currently living free in the landscape. With the support of the #EU LIFE Programme, rewilding efforts are being scaled up across the Rhodope Mountains, ensuring this vital species continues its remarkable comeback and strengthens local biodiversity. This transformation came from valuing something beyond the human context—something that feels rare in modern times. It's not about luxury, but about the 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗿𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲, 𝗻𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀. Our involvement came about as part of our life’s pattern—experiences choosing us rather than the other way around. This experience was both incredible and challenging. Below is an old post I wrote during the depths of winter while living in the reserve—it offers a glimpse into what it was like to work on the front line of snow leopards conservation in such harsh conditions: “𝘈𝘴 𝘐 𝘸𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘮𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘢𝘨𝘦, 𝘐 𝘢𝘮 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘹𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘦 𝘸𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘛𝘪𝘦𝘯-𝘚𝘩𝘢𝘯 𝘮𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘒𝘺𝘳𝘨𝘺𝘻𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯, 𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘯 𝘢𝘯 𝘦𝘹-𝘴𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘦𝘵 𝘧𝘢𝘳𝘮 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘢 𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘦 𝘣𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘴 𝘤𝘰𝘢𝘭 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘵𝘰 𝘬𝘦𝘦𝘱 𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘮, 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘯𝘰 𝘳𝘶𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳, 𝘢𝘯 𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦 𝘵𝘰𝘪𝘭𝘦𝘵 100 𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘢𝘸𝘢𝘺, 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘯𝘰 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳 𝘢𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘴𝘢𝘶𝘯𝘢𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘷𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘢𝘨𝘦. 🐋🌊 The results are in from the latest whale count event in Hawaii! Volunteers spotted a total of 855 majestic whales across the state during Saturday's coordinated efforts, including 387 whales counted within Maui Nui. This final count of the season marks another successful collaboration between Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary Ocean Count and Pacific Whale Foundation's Great Whale Count. The data collected not only provides insights into humpback whale occurrence but also highlights the importance of public awareness and community science. Despite varying weather conditions, dedicated volunteers across 46 sites ensured a comprehensive snapshot of whale activity. Such collaborative efforts are crucial for the ongoing protection of these magnificent creatures and their habitat in Hawaiian waters. Preliminary data and more information about the Sanctuary Ocean Count and Great Whale Count can be found at: https://lnkd.in/gwHFfaiz and https://bit.ly/41h7EKt Let's continue to support and celebrate these conservation initiatives! 🌊🐋 Thank you to all the awesome volunteers who participated this season! #CommunityScience #VolunteerOpportunities #PacificWhaleFoundation #OceanResearch #LongTermData

This week's #DUCProjectDragonfly featured observation is not a dragonfly, but a Blanding's turtle, photographed and logged by iNaturalist user: mhalsted in Lennox and Addington County, Ontario. The Blanding's turtle is a medium-sized turtle with a yellow throat and chin. Both its colouration and the rounder shape of its shell distinguish this species from most other turtles found in Canada. But what does a turtle have to do with Project Dragonfly? Dragonfly nymphs are a major food source for Blanding's turtles! They are just one of many species in a wetland that depend on dragonflies to survive. Read more about the threats Canada's turtles are facing. ➡️ https://loom.ly/aWWfn98 #DucksUnlimitedCanada #Turtles #SpeciesAtRisk #Biodiversity #Ecosystems #Habitat #Wetlands #Conservation

Taonga Tuesday Southern Alps gecko (Woodworthia "Southern Alps") The Southern Alps gecko is one of Aotearoa’s highest-living gecko species — they have been found up to 1,900 metres above sea level! Southern Alps geckos occupy the north-eastern reaches of the Southern Lakes Sanctuary project area and are often spotted near Wānaka and Hāwea. They primarily occupy rocky areas, but will also climb into shrubs and trees where those are present. Some people have even found these geckos living in fallen pine trees! Unfortunately, Southern Alps geckos are vulnerable to predators like rodents, mustelids, and cats. They have also been impacted by habitat modification, and generally require complex habitats to survive. Although the Southern Alps gecko is relatively common, its populations are thought to be slowly declining, so it has been issued a conservation status of “At Risk — Declining”. You can help native lizards, like the Southern Alps gecko, by removing mammalian predators (including mice!), and by keeping kitty cats indoors. You can also help our native lizards by protecting their habitats, planting native trees/shrubs, and creating rocky habitats for them! #southernalpsgecko #woodworthia #geckos #lizards #wildlife #nature #newzealand #lizard #nativespecies #taongatuesday #beautiful #reptiles

Did you know you can Adopt a Bighorn? 🧡 Desert bighorn sheep play a vital role in Zion National Park's ecosystem as large herbivores and valuable prey for large carnivores, such as mountain lions. Bighorn are sometimes called "wilderness species" because they inhabit some of the most remote and stunning environments in the West. By joining the Adopt-a-Bighorn program, you can help protect the desert bighorn sheep, the park's symbol of wilderness. When a Park supports a healthy population of such a sensitive species, it is proof of a healthy ecosystem and its ability to support many other wildlife species, including mountain lions, California condors, Mexican spotted owls, and peregrine falcons. 🤗 All program proceeds go directly toward bighorn research in Zion National Park. #ZionForever #PreserveTheParks #ProtectOurSanctuaries #GuardiansOfTheWild #SaveOurParks #CedarBreaksForever #PipeSpringPride #DixieForestForever #ForeverStartsNow #ConserveZion #WildlifeGuardians #NatureStewards #NationalParksForever #ExploreResponsibly #SupportOurParks
