🌐 Ofcom has unveiled strict guidelines aimed at curbing the misleading use of terms like "fibre" and "full-fibre". ISPs will only be able to use these terms if their network genuinely brings fibre optic cables all the way to users' homes (FTTP / FTTH). Over the past decade, certain Internet providers have been guilty of marketing slower "part-fibre" or "hybrid-fibre" solutions as "fibre broadband" products. This practice has contributed to confusion among consumers, many of whom are unaware of the distinctions between various broadband technologies. At CTG, we fully support Ofcom's stance in rectifying the misinformation surrounding "fibre" broadband. The US Fixed broadband rate is coming down from 2.7% as subsidy programs taper off. 2. Historically, The maximum US reach for mass market technology has been 96%, the peak number for fixed telephony. 3. Cable faces the challenge of addressing the culturally related customer service proposition or the technology-related speed and reliability proposition. 4. Consumers who subscribe to a fiber provider that advertises symmetrical capabilities think they need it more than consumers with different fiber providers. 5. It's exciting to see the the latest FCC Notice of Inquiry (NOI) considers a new broadband definition of 100/20Mbps, but also considers a longer term goal of 1Gbps/500Mbps. It appears that government is taking an increasingly detailed interest in the telecoms industry whether it is oversight of the proposed M&A activity, investigating Motorola's position with Airwave and the ESN project, or in this case looking into value for money from the Shared Rural Network. With an election coming if there is a change in government there will likely be a pause to review previously committed plans and strategies. #telcoms #5G #telecommunications
