CCL Label launches EcoFloat WHITE shrink sleeves for light sensitive products EcoFloat® WHITE supports the use of widely recycled #transparent #PETbottles combined with a white opaque #sleeve / Low density sleeve material supports float separation from PET during the #recycling process / Increases yield of high-quality, food-grade PET flakes for #bottletobottlerecycling. Guenther Birkner, member of the management team at CCL: "EcoFloat WHITE will enable greater recyclability for dairy packaging and other products that are light sensitive … We have seen a big trend in the Food and Beverage but also Home and Personal care industries to move packaging into transparent PET, which has an established food grade recycling stream. It is our goal to support this with a functional product decoration.” Fenkart Norbert, who heads the R&D department at CCL's sustainable sleeve label center in Dornbirn, Austria: "Since 80 percent of recycling is actually sorting, we had to make sure that our solution was detectable by the standard technology used in the recycling industry today. We can use carbon-free inks to create additional lightblocking properties on the sleeve. These work well in NIR detection as we have seen in tests. The underlying rigid PET bottle is detected and the bottle is sorted into the correct waste stream." Marika Knorr, Head of Sustainability and Communication at CCL Label: "Legislation such as the European Green Deal and the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation will drive 'design for recycling' or eco-design in the coming years. Every brand has to come up with packaging that is actually recyclable and more important – recycled.” Photo: CCL Label #connectingcomPETence #circulareconomy #sustainablepackaging https://lnkd.in/d_Kd5iqN

PepsiCo's recent unveiling of their focus on home-compostable packaging is a significant step towards a more sustainable future. The company's Greenhouse Learning Center, a first of its kind, is set to test packaging for both industrial and home composting scenarios. This move aligns with PepsiCo's 2025 goal of designing all packaging to be recyclable, reusable, compostable, or biodegradable. The company's commitment to compostable packaging is not just about sustainability, but also about maintaining the quality of their products. The multilayer films developed by their packaging engineers ensure the food remains fresh and safe to eat. Interestingly, PepsiCo's sights are now set on home compostable packaging. This shift is a testament to the flexibility of compostable packaging as an end-of-life option. The compostable packaging of their Off The Eaten Path bags is certified to ASTM 6400 standards by the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI). This is a significant achievement considering the challenges of maintaining the shelf life of compostable packaging. PepsiCo's investment in compostable packaging could serve as a catalyst for other retail food companies to follow suit. This could potentially mark the beginning of a wider use of compostable packaging in the US. #PepsiCo #CompostablePackaging #Sustainability #GreenhouseLearningCenter #HomeComposting

Packaging Innovation: Use of rPET in wine bottles The clinking of wine bottles being put into the recycling bin could become a thing of the past. While traditionalists may be concerned about ditching round glass ones, a new flat plastic bottle will make wine easier to transport - significantly reducing the industry's carbon footprint. The new packaging is lighter – 63g each compared with an average of 460g for one glass bottle – and can be stacked like a set of books during transport. Packamama bottles are made from 100% recycled m rPET – a recycled form of polyethylene terephthalate commonly used for making soft drinks bottles. Both the bottle and cap are also fully recyclable. A great example of rPET usage in Food Packaging. 🌿 Innovation Alert: A Leap Towards Sustainability in Snack Packaging 🌿 In a groundbreaking move, The British Crisp Co. has introduced the first-ever recyclable paper chip bag, setting a new standard in packaging sustainability. This pioneering effort, in collaboration with Evopak and leveraging Aquapak's innovative Hydropol polymer, marks a monumental stride towards solving the environmental challenge posed by the snack industry's traditional packaging. With Brits consuming over eight billion packets of crisps annually, the majority ending up in landfills or incinerators, the need for a sustainable solution has never been more urgent. The British Crisp Co.'s recyclable crisp packet not only addresses this issue head-on but also opens the door to a world of possibilities for packaging across various sectors. The unique properties of Hydropol allow these bags to be recycled, re-pulped, and even composted, offering a beacon of hope for drastically reducing snack packaging waste. Furthermore, these bags come with an "I’m Paper, Recycle Me" label, effortlessly integrating into existing curbside recycling programs. This innovation isn't just a win for the environment; it represents a pivotal moment for the industry to embrace sustainable practices that consumers are increasingly demanding. It challenges us to think beyond traditional materials and processes, inspiring a shift towards more eco-friendly alternatives without compromising on product quality or consumer convenience. 🌍 A Call to Action for the Food Industry 🌍 As we commend The British Crisp Co. for their leadership, let's use this moment as a catalyst for change. Summer is Ice Cream Time! 🍦 As we enjoy our favorite frozen treats this summer, the dairy industry is making significant strides in sustainable packaging. Huhtamaki's ICON® packaging is an innovative recyclable ice cream packaging solution available for the US market. What makes this frozen dessert packaging an ICON®? The difference is in the coating. Traditional polyethylene-coated paper cups are not widely recyclable in the US. ICON® is eliminating the polyethylene and using a new water-based barrier coating that is re-pulpable, allowing cups to be recycled in communities that recycle paper products. Just make sure to check locally. Transitioning to more sustainable #packaging is a goal of many #petfoodindustry brands, but it does not come without challenges. For example, the time needed to qualify the recyclable materials in manufacturing and evaluate the product life performance realistically pushes accomplishing these targets to 2025, if not later. And with 2024 well underway, the time has come for processors to deliver on these targets.
