CHIA today published the Annual Massachusetts Acute Hospital and Health System Financial Performance Report for hospital fiscal year (HFY) 2022. This publication reports on the profitability, liquidity, and solvency of hospital health systems and their affiliated acute hospitals, as well as the profitability of affiliated physician organizations. For the first time this year, CHIA began collecting data on temporary staffing expenses to better understand the impact of these temporary labor costs on hospitals and their health systems. This report includes the initial results of these filings, which were collected retrospectively for HFYs 2019 through 2022. This report also incorporates the financial impact of COVID-19 on hospitals during HFY 2022; while the majority of federal and state COVID relief funding was distributed in HFY 2020, some hospitals received and reported funding in HFYs 2021 and 2022. Introducing Joseph Brant Hospital's Patient and Family Advisors! PFAs play a crucial role in healthcare settings, contributing to improved patient experiences, safety, and overall quality of care. JBH developed its Patient Family Advisory Council in 2020, and our PFAs have partnered with our staff and physicians to bring the patient/family perspective to various initiatives, committees, and quality-of-care councils. Partnering with our PFAs benefits the Patient Experience in the following ways: - Provide diverse viewpoints based on their personal experiences as patients or family members. - Collaborate with hospital staff, physicians, and leadership to co-design policies, procedures, and practices that ensure person-centered decisions. - Our PFAs contribute to improving quality by offering unique perspectives on areas that could be enhanced, thereby contributing to safer and more effective care experiences. - Advisory council contributes to better decision-making and patient outcomes. “Having a PFA on our committee helps ground our team and enables us to see things through lived experiences and feedback from friends and family,” JBH Director. Kaufman Hall's recent report on hospital's operating margin is encouraging! Hospitals' median operating margin was 1.2% through October, marking the third straight month with the same year-to-date median and signaling growing stability. This is from their "National Hospital Flash Report," which is based on data from more than 1,300 hospitals. "Kaufman Hall said the 1.2% year-to-date median operating margin for October reflects "continued stabilization" among hospitals. In the first 10 months of 2023, hospitals' net operating revenue per calendar day was up 6%, and total expense per calendar day was up 4% compared to the same time period in 2022." Great work, Erik Swanson!
