Today I decided to cancel my Amazon Prime subscription after over 20 years, due to one basic reason - practically non-existent cross country support. Recent life-work changes has me splitting time between inside and outside the states. And I’ve come to realize almost none of my prime benefits carry over when I’m outside the country. No free shipping, can’t use my prime store card so no cash-back on purchases, Prime Video’s “traveling customer” catalog is horribly limited - even titles that are natively available in the foreign country are not available - to name a few. What really pushed me over the edge was the fact that I have to cancel my Prime in one country and re-apply in another, every time I travel out of the country. When I change the country preference, Amazon doesn’t even treat me as a Prime member. And no customer service rep was able to actually explain what will happen to all my purchased media if I redo my prime membership from one country to another - e-books, audiobooks, music, movies, photos etc. For instance, I have over 50k pictures in Amazon photos. So everytime I travel Amazon expects me to download my entire collection and re-upload them? 🤯 I couldn’t find any Amazon tool that makes this seamless. Despite spending a cumulative 36 hours across various support chat sessions, I learned less from Amazon customer support than what I gleaned on by googling for answers myself. I realize my situation is an edge case. But isn’t that what customer ‘obsession’ is all about? To recognize that the customer is divinely discontent. And use it as a driver to work vigorously to earn and keep their trust? Today I can’t trust my purchases will remain intact and I don’t trust that Amazon cares. I really don’t want to take this drastic step, but Prime simply isn’t working for my needs anymore. So it’s time to bid adieu. Au revoir Prime. Hope this isn’t a one-way door decision.

I wish, I wish, I wish, Amazon Wish Lists were free from SaaS product silos. Yesterday, I asked: What could be improved for companies using the feature concept of a wish list? For me, the HUGE missed opportunity by Amazon is the separation of the wish list concept for Amazon from that of Audible. There is no place to go to find a universal wish list. It looks like this is also the case for the Amazon Music Unlimited Library feature and Prime Video favourites (based on Google search, I don't have a subscription). The missed opportunity is creating a portfolio of end-user products, where at least some features, like wish lists and recommendations, could lend themselves well to a platform solution, for the best user experience. It is important to remember that the customer/user does not care how you choose to build your software. The customer only cares about having delightful experiences! Next, I will explore a future state service blueprint of adding audiobooks to my wishlist on Audible, which is an addition to a universal wish list. Keep pursuing your potential!

At $59.99 (down from $129.99), it’s a nice deal, though you’ll have to cough up an extra $15 if you want to avoid ads on the lock screen. It has an eight-inch screen that’s technically HD but on the lower end. At 1280×800 pixels, it’s not going to blow you away with its picture quality, but it’s reportedly decent enough for casual viewing. The Fire HD 8 runs on a hexa-core processor and has 2GB RAM—good enough for light browsing and streaming. Just don’t expect to multitask or run heavy apps on this thing. A PCMag review notes the Fire HD 8 can be a bit slow—not unusably so, but you might notice some lag here and there. It comes with 64GB of storage, but if you’re a media junkie and require more storage, you can bump it up to 1TB with a microSD card. As an Amazon product, it comes pre-loaded with apps such as Kindle, Prime Video, Audible, and Prime Music. It also gives you access to the Amazon app store, which has a decent selection of apps and games. It does not provide access to the Google Play Store, so you may not find some popular Android apps (like YouTube and Gmail) on this device. On the plus side, the audio quality and battery life of this tablet are pretty solid. Amazon says it lasts 13 hours, but you’re looking at more like 10, which isn’t bad for a tablet that costs $59.99.
