Today's launch of the adult social care workforce strategy 'feels like we are on the cusp of finally taking action to value our care workforce properly, for the amazing work they do every day', said Anna Hemmings, CEO of ADASS. “People that work in care and support transform people lives and enable millions of us facing disability and illness, to live well, take part in our community and work, if we can. Yet our, mainly female, care workforce is undervalued and poorly paid, reflected by the fact there are over 130,000 vacancies across the sector. “The Skills for Care workforce strategy sets out how to build and retain a first-class care workforce, including structured training and development, and improving pay and conditions to make social care a career aspiration. Along with the Government’s commitment in the Kings Speech on fair pay in social care yesterday, this strategy feels like an important step forward. We look forward to working with the Government and our stakeholders to making it a reality.    

Pleased to see the real Living Wage presented and modelled as a new national pay approach in the Skills for Care adult social care workforce strategy. This is the first strategy of its kind covering the next 15 years and should be of great interest to the new government. There is no way that we can attract and retain necessary talent in the sector when social care workers are being paid wages they cannot afford to live on.

The social care sector urgently needs more workers. Skills for Care’s suggestions to improve worker pay are interesting ideas for the new Government to consider. A much needed strategy for our vital workforce!

Congratulations Professor Oonagh Smyth and the team at Skills for Care on the launch of "A Workforce Strategy for Adult Social Care in England." This is a groundbreaking achievement, marking the first time the adult social care sector has united to create the Workforce Strategy it so critically needs. The development of this vital Strategy has been a truly collaborative effort, made possible by the expertise, time, and commitment of many dedicated stakeholders. Their hard work and dedication have brought us to this pivotal moment. Adult social care has urgently needed a comprehensive workforce strategy to ensure we have enough of the right people with the right skills to provide the best possible care and support for those who rely on it. This Strategy is not just a plan but a commitment to the future of care in England. I would encourage The Labour Party to support the strategy implementation by putting the right funding and national policies in place. The Skills for Care Workforce Strategy launched today! It's brilliant to see a real Living Wage for adult social care workers recommended in the report. We know that over 400,000 care workers in England are paid below the real Living Wage. Despite being the backbone of our country, providing essential care to our loved ones when they need it most, many are struggling to make ends meet in insecure, poorly paid jobs that don't cover the cost of living. The new government has an opportunity to impact the lives of millions by committing to pay the real Living Wage for adult social care workers. Decent pay is a vital first step in addressing the staffing shortfall and building a sustainable social care system that values its workers and delivers high quality care. #LivingWage

This is so important - well done Skills for Care! Crucial for recruiting and retaining social care workers, who provide vital support for people with a learning disability. We especially need to all be really clear, many, many people providing essential social care do not work in the public sector. So, pay and other settlements need to be for all in the social care sector and the funding needs to follow the settlements. And, where investment is needed for the tech, tools, processes and standards that contribute to greater productivity, this needs funding too. We're all paying for social care being underfunded. Surely we would rather pay for it to be funded?

We welcome the #ASCWorkforceStrategy which is essential as we work to build a professional care workforce and better provide for the needs of our ageing population whilst also supporting the NHS.   The workforce remains a key focus for us at Home Instead UK. We shall continue to attract and retain great Care Professionals by providing meaningful roles, developing training and career pathways and by offering a broad range of opportunities in an ever-changing care landscape.   The NHS and Government are committed to care in the community; social care can facilitate that but needs the right people with the right skills to deliver quality care.   Social care needs all stakeholders to come together to urgently shape solutions that will elevate the care workforce and make care a career of the future – one that our ageing world desperately needs. #socialcare #homecare
