Welcome to First Sight LLC, where we're dedicated to transforming global vision care. My wife, Dr. Marsha Davidson and I are the founders and driving force behind this initiative. Our journey began as we traversed internationally, witnessing the acute need for affordable and accessible corrective eye care solutions. This realization led to the inception of First Sight, LLC; a 501(c)3, philanthropic organization committed to revolutionizing vision care. Our mission is simple, yet impactful: to provide affordable and accessible prescription eyeglasses in under ten minutes. It has been clinically tested and verified by the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Its affordable, with prices ranging from US$3.95 to $6.95. We've already distributed tens of thousands of high-quality eyeglasses in 31 countries, touching lives and improving vision for so many. But yet, a lot of more work needs to be accomplished. First Sight eyeglasses are always provided at no charge to the recipients in the under-served communities. What sets First Sight apart is our commitment to simplicity and efficiency. Our eyeglasses are designed to be low-tech, fool-proof and high impact, requiring no electricity or specialized equipment. With our system, even non-professionals can perform visual screenings and fit customized prescription eyeglasses quickly and easily. First Sight eyeglasses process is totally mobile, making them ideal for remote and underserved communities. They can be distributed anywhere, providing immediate relief to those in need. Each prescription pair can be prepared in under 10 minutes, and they're incredibly affordable, making vision correction more accessible than ever. Again, our process needs no qualified personnel - anyone can screen and fit our prescription eyeglasses. Aparito, in collaboration with Ospedale Pediatrico Bambino Gesù and Martina e la sua Luna Onlus, has made remarkable progress in developing a groundbreaking app on Aparito's Atom5™ platform specifically designed to provide support for children and families living with hydrocephalus shunts. 📱Hydrocephalus shunts can sometimes pose serious challenges, leading to symptoms like headaches, vomiting, and drowsiness. But with the h2.0 app, we're changing the game! 📈 This incredible tool helps track the frequency and severity of these symptoms, ensuring real-time visibility for the clinical team. 💪 In the initial phase of this project, we interviewed and worked closely with 10 families who used the app for 30 days. The feedback we received was overwhelming! Their high scores and invaluable insights have played a pivotal role in refining the app further. 🎉 We're excited to announce that 30 more families will join us in using the H2.0 app for a period of six months. Together, we will create a truly remarkable tool that supports these children and their families. 👩⚕️Early user feedback is vital for the success of digital solutions like this, and we couldn't be more thrilled with the progress we've made so far. San Foundation Research Grant recipients announced! Congratulations to Dr Ketan Bhatt and Marleta Fong on being the recipients of the inaugural San Foundation Research Grant. Through the generosity and support of our donors, San Foundation has been able to provide funding to the amount of $20,000 for a research project that captures the essence of caring for the mind, body, and spirit, leading to improved patient experiences, patient outcomes and / or health systems. “The focus of the project is to see if we can improve the outcomes for patients with dementia that come through our EC, by creating a physical space and environment in an acute setting that caters more towards their psychosocial needs. We will be looking at a cohort of patients before this study starts as a control and reference point and then after implementation of this new model of care. By establishing an appropriate environment for this group of patients we will see if we can improve their patient journey through reduced LOS, decrease in hospital acquired complications, stress on the nursing staff, use of psychotropics and falls. It’s an exciting project and we hope to see some big changes in the care of our dementia patients.” Dr Ketan Bhatt, Geriatrician More funding will be needed to provide diversional therapists and run activities on an ongoing basis, as well as complete the two-year research project. This last year, I volunteered and did a bit of contract work for Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals (RBH) as a Digital Patient Storyteller. The bit of contract work I did was kindly supported by Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospitals Charity Alastair Ball and Karen Taylor to: 1. Create a Baseline Evaluation methodologies for the coproducers to use to create evaluation forms for Storytellers to complete and forms for the Group to log and reflect on their work. This is used to report: impact, things to improve, understand experiences and help the NHS improve and celebrate stuff. 2. Lead on a cocreating of an eight person story video for an online NHS Storytelling Conference. 3. Share my own story of great respiratory physio support at RBH by creating a 3 minute video for internal NHS use. 4. Help the Group out, with Agenda, minutes etc. 5. Work on Coproduction stuff with the PPEG group Being part of the Group was such an intimate and enjoyable experience. I met and made some great friends and colleagues. I supported Karen, who initiated and developed a Story Coproduction model at RBH as a way to coproduce patient stories to influence the development of services, and patient engagement across all departments in: cardio and respiratory health. Now, at the end of the year, it's time to reflect, thank RBH for the opportunity to be part of some great Coproduction work. Charlie Churchill who volunteers his time to Chair the Group, is someone we respect and someone who empowers us all in the Group. At the start of working with the Patient Storyteller Group, there were 6 of us. Sadly, we lost one of our dear friends and colleague to the awful condition Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF). Our colleague, did so much for advocating empathy and understanding of IPF, and he worked with Action for Pulmonary Fibrosis to support their great work too. He is missed. With sadness, I now stop being part of the Patient Storytelling Group. But I will always be part of the campaign to improve and advocate for increased funding and support for IPF via Action for Pulmonary Fibrosis Pulmonary Fibrosis Trust Next year will be one of volunteering, by developing Active Inclusion: Equity in Employment and growing it as a Coproduction Programme, undertaking training, and trying to get my literature review finished for a PhD Proposal. We believe in the power of collective efforts to create meaningful change, and we are proud supporters of 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐚𝐦𝐛𝐢𝐚 𝐌𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 in partnership with 𝐖𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐀𝐥𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐮𝐭𝐞 (𝐖𝐂𝐀𝐂), and the 𝐒𝐰𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐍𝐞𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 (𝐒𝐀𝐍𝐂). 𝐖𝐂𝐀𝐂 is a non-profit organization led by entrepreneur brothers Carl-Johan and Christian Brandt, who are photographers, models, and doctors. With 𝐖𝐂𝐀𝐂, they find sponsors to support charity missions in specific areas of need across the globe. Last year, one of their big projects was to help the organization 𝐒𝐀𝐍𝐂, which educates and trains African doctors on new techniques, collecting equipment, and making extended documentation to help 𝐒𝐀𝐍𝐂's future missions. Last June, it was 𝐒𝐀𝐍𝐂's 5th mission and by far the largest, with results exceeding all expectations. During the 2-week visit, they were able to: 👉Communicate and demonstrate micro neurosurgery principles in general and specific intra-operative techniques. 👉Train OR staff in micro neurosurgical instrumentation and specific micro neurosurgical equipment handling. 👉Operate 22 cases and assess 123 patients in an outpatient clinic. 👉Teach a comprehensive course on pre-, peri-, and post-operative dedicated neurosurgical care, including hands-on training in a neuro-intermediate care ward developed during the mission (!).  👉Provide special training for spinal cord injury patients by an occupational therapist. 👉Assess existing equipment and several pieces of vital importance received maintenance and repair by a biomedical engineer. 👉Host a symposium on the topics of epilepsy and global neurosurgery on June 13 with lecturers from the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital (EFSTH) and the SANC team. Since then, 𝐒𝐀𝐍𝐂 has had monthly follow-up meetings on the patient's status. The ground foundation of 𝐖𝐂𝐀𝐂 is to show the world that 𝐖𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐀𝐥𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐮𝐭𝐞. Every contribution, no matter the size, makes a difference. No contributions are too small or too big as long as you do SOMETHING. SECOND LIFE, the digital communication platform made by Sociabble that caters to intensive care survivors, families, and caregivers has reached 500 members! 🌟 How did this project come to life? Sociabble was asked by 101 Fund, the first international endowment fund dedicated entirely to the progress of intensive care, to help them create their own digital communication platform. In order to do this, the SECOND LIFE digital network is exclusively dedicated to supporting intensive care survivors, as well as their loved ones and caregivers, to "live better" during and after intensive care. The platform also connects all caregivers in the field and seeks to bring enhanced meaning and purpose to their daily lives. 👉 One O One's objective? To save 1 million lives over the next 4 years, by fulfilling 3 major missions: better care, better research, and better support.
