Work led by me and Vishvas Chalishazar, Ph.D. has been featured by Department of Energy Water Power Technologies Office on how we can meet electrical demands in the future electrical grid while still providing environmental protections. Definitely one of the most fun projects I've ever got to work on, let alone lead, and included contributions from fisheries and aquatic ecologists, hydrologists, electrical and other engineers of all types, software engineers (and probably more) from across five national labs #pnnl, #ornl, #anl, #nrel, #inl and private industry #rti! As the grid evolves to incorporate more variable renewable energy sources, like solar power and wind energy, hydropower will play a key role in ensuring it remains reliable and stable. A major challenge for hydropower is how to meet growing energy demand while mitigating environmental impacts. But what if, rather than identifying ways to mitigate impacts, energy and environment priorities could both be optimized? “There’s a legacy paradigm in hydropower that pits power generation against environmental mitigation and protection measures, but it doesn’t have to be like that. Our research shows that co-optimizing energy and environmental outcomes can lead to better outcomes in both areas,” explained Brenda Pracheil, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) Earth scientist, fisheries biologist, and lead author of a report on co-optimization of hydropower outcomes. “We found that the environmental requirements for hydropower flows, such as minimum flows and restrictions on how quickly water flows can be increased and decreased over a given time, are most likely to limit operational flexibility during summer and the middle of the day, which in some cases is when the grid is most likely to experience stress,” explained Vishvas Chalishazar, PNNL electrical engineer, grid resilience team lead, and co-author on the report. “But by co-optimizing energy and environmental outcomes, it’s possible to create opportunities for energy-environment win-wins.” 🌎 🤝 💡

This is such a great idea. I have questions thou because I am not an expert: does the inverter stay at land? And how close to the coast line are max talking about? Short range installation like as in a few meters or into the tens/hundreds of meters? What about current speeds? Or wind? I mean drift needs to be avoided, right?

Solar generation (including distributed), which made up 3.3 percent of total U.S. generation in 2020, is the fastest-growing electricity source. Globally, renewables made up 29 percent of electricity generation in 2020, much of it from hydropower (16.8 percent). A record amount of over 256 GW of renewable power capacity was added globally during 2020.

What’s your idea for storing renewable energy?

This seems like a clever solution of energy storage, inexpensive and without using scarce resources (such as lithium or rare earth metals).
