For today’s EV Jargon Buster, we’re looking at BIK (Benefit-In-Kind). 🙌 BIK is the tax due on a ‘perk’ like a company car. However, it’s worth noting that BIK rates can be considerably lower for lesser-polluting vehicles like #EVs. Our EV Jargon Buster is designed to simplify any confusing EV terminology, so if you’re ever unsure, check it out here: https://lnkd.in/eckbyBZd #EMobility #ElectricFleets #BIKTax

Some great news this morning! 🥳 The UK sold a record 56,000 electric #vehicles in Sep and for two months in a row, the share of car sales being 100% #electric was over 20%. Overall, the share of new #car #sales this year is over 18% this is the number required for carmakers to meet this year's #ZEV target when flexibilities are taken into account. All the data shows that #carmakers will comply with the targets without needing to pay fines. In spite of this carmakers are claiming that we're off track and need massive #subsidies. This is despite the fact that in the last two years, Europe’s biggest carmakers made a combined £109 BILLION in #profits. With a £22 BILLION black hole in the government’s purse, the absolute last thing we should be doing is giving #taxpayer handouts to #companies making so much money. Carmakers are deploying a classic strategy in an attempt to unnerve the #government about the UK’s single-biggest carbon-cutting policy to date and trying to get a handout from targets that are actually about climate action. Why should the government prioritise these companies profits over the country’s ambitions to reach net zero? They shouldn’t! To support carmakers reach targets the government should: -Reform VED to incentivise smaller, more #affordable EV models. -Support #charging #infrastructure rollout in underserved regions. -Dispel misinfo and raise awareness of EV incentives through an industry-funded campaign. Heavy duty electric trucks in Australia are poised to make a significant impact on reducing transport pollution, according to a recent inquiry. Automakers and industry groups are stressing the necessity of overcoming regulatory roadblocks and high prices that currently impede their widespread adoption. During the Transition to Electric Vehicles inquiry in Brisbane, stakeholders highlighted the importance of legal changes to support low-emission transport and financial assistance to address existing barriers. The inquiry's recent public hearing discussed the upcoming price "tipping point" for electric vehicles, indicating a shift towards greater affordability for consumers. Additionally, discussions focused on potential rebate schemes for second-hand electric vehicle purchases, aiming to further incentivize the transition to cleaner transport options. This conversation follows the Queensland government's decision to discontinue rebates on new electric car purchases, contrasting with the ongoing efforts to promote sustainable transport solutions. Sales data reflecting a slowdown in new electric car purchases in August underscores the urgency of tackling challenges to expedite the adoption of electric vehicles in Australia. Labor claims that the new car standards emissions scheme is about getting more electric cars onto the grid. The grim reality is that this inner-city appeasing policy will only serve to make the most popular and versatile cars enjoyed by Australians, utes and SUV's, more expensive - in the order of more than $10,000 for some vehicles. You can read more on why the new car standards policy will punish us all in my recent opinion piece in the Kalgoorlie Miner below 👇

My friend is looking for a car to buy right now, and he told me that he pays attention to the vehicle's power and, surprisingly for me, weight parameters. After some discussion and research, I've started to see these parameters from another perspective. Vehicle weight is essential for calculating the road tax amount. More powerful engines increase the car's total weight, giving it more power and speed on the road; more weight means more road taxes to pay. It works in the opposite direction as well. With a lightweight engine, such as a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder, you will definitely not break records on the Zandvoort circuit. However, the weight-to-power ratio and weight-to-torque ratio parameters can be relatively high, showing that cars with this type of engine are not bad at all. With 30 kilometres per hour limits in cities and highway speed limits, it is not surprising that cars with small engines and economical fuel consumption have become increasingly popular. Especially when the vehicle fulfils the goal to drive from point A to point B. #vehiclePerformance #roadTax #enginePower #cityDriving #vehicleWeight

How can we be expected to use public transport when it’s ridiculously expensive and more time consuming than driving? I’ve just been from West Yorkshire to Somerset to visit my family. The drive takes about 4.5hrs each way and has cost about £60 in diesel. I’ve just checked how much it would of been to go by train. For 2 tickets, standard class it was coming out at over £300 for 2 tickets (standard class) and taking over 7hrs each way, with multiple stops! We will never get cars off of the roads until there is a viable alternative! #publictransport #carbonfootprint #carbonemissions #trains #britishrail #railindustry #transportinfrastructure

https://lnkd.in/gJvJjz2M This is the 1st time I've seen the mechanism explaining how the new fuel efficiency standards are expected to work. It's a mistake, I think, to have a standard that from day 1 every single vehicle in it is in breach of it. #australia #fuelstandards #fuelefficencystandard

Cars in Australia are about to get more expensive, AGAIN! 🔥 👇 This week, the Albanese government announced that from the 1st of January 2025, car manufacturers will need to have an average CO2 output 60% below the current average by the end of the decade. This threshold average will apply across the total model lineup of a car importer. Chris Bowen the Climate Change Minister says that Australian drivers will save $1000 a year in fuel and that ICE vehicles will not go up in price. I disagree. While the policy makes sense and is likely to reduce the CO2 emissions of new cars sold in Australia, it is wrong to say there won’t be any impact on Australian consumers. Of course, there will be, that is the point - isn’t it? Take, for example, Toyota. Australia’s largest seller of cars and in most years sells one-quarter of all cars sold in this country. They have a vehicle in almost every model segment and are hugely influential in the market. Their Landcruisers and Hilux Utes dominate the 4WD and commercial market are currently powered by diesel and are likely well above the CO2 threshold that the government will set. Once the legislation comes into force, the popularity of these models is likely to put pressure on Toyota’s total average CO2 output. Toyota being a rational business will likely try to dampen the demand for these higher polluting cars by increasing the price and hence their gross margin. They will then use this increased margin to subsidise their hybrids and EVs to increase their volume and hence lower their average CO2 output to avoid the government-mandated fines. As a diversified OEM, Toyota has the ability to play with its sold model mix to ultimately sell more cars by using internal methods. For those brands that aren’t diversified and sell mostly ICE models above the threshold, then their only option will be to trade their liability with another OEM that mostly sells EVs to avoid the fines. The effect on the price of ICE is the same, the internal cost to sell an ICE car will go up and the cost to sell an EV will go down. The reality is, that despite the environmental rationale to buy an EV that there might be, there are still consumers who want and need an ICE vehicle. These cars will still be popular and will certainly go up in price. In fact, EVs are generally still more expensive to produce, and therefore all cars on average will be more expensive. This will inevitably lead to increased prices for used cars as the affordability of new cars reduces. This dynamic always pushes consumers towards more affordable used cars, which were originally sold before the legislation. Therefore, the price of used cars will generally go up leading up to and after the 1st of January 2025. This pressure will be particularly evident in large 4WD and Utes. With an increase in EVs on the road we need to take into account the various factors that may impact on the infrastructure. EVs are 30-40% heavier than their ICE counterparts due to the heavy battery-packs. This will result in significantly more tyre-wear and impact on the road surface. Tyre manufacturers have estimated that traditional tyres can wear up to 30% faster in EVs due to differences in drive and torque alone. They have therefore responded with EV-specific tyres with strengthened sidewalls and more resilient rubber compounds. It is very likely that public works and roads agencies will need to update their models on road traffic and surface degradation to incorporate the additional overall weight impacts over time. #frostandsullivan #electricvehicles #helpingafricagrow #roadfreight

Lets talk about Aquaplaning! Aquaplaning is the often frightening experience of our tyres losing traction with the road because of a layer of water. So what should you do if this happens? Firstly, don't panic and don't slam on the brakes! Instead, gently ease off the accelerator, whilst keeping the steering wheel straight. When you feel the car begin to regain control, you can then slowly start to brake. A good avoidance measure is to make sure your tyres are in good condition. If in doubt, we'll check them out! 🚗 - 01243 830310 🚗 - [email protected] 🚗 - https://lnkd.in/e7BZs6eC #bognorregis #garage #car #carrepair #mot #service #driving #familybusiness #bognor #bognorbusiness #carservicing #vehiclerepairs #westsussexbusiness #localbusiness #electriccar #electricvehicle #renault #citroen #peugeot
