'Digital house arrest' is a fraudulent scheme where scammers impersonate law enforcement officers to deceive victims into believing that their bank account, SIM card, Aadhaar card, or other linked cards have been used unlawfully. The fraudsters then virtually restrain the victims from leaving their homes and coerce them into paying money. In a typical scenario, the scammers convince the victim that their personal information was involved in criminal activities, creating fear and urgency. They may ask the victim to stay at home for an extended period, conduct fake interrogations, and even remotely access the victim's devices. Through these tactics, they gain access to sensitive information and drain the victim's bank account. These cybercriminals are adept at manipulating victims and use various tools like translation software to send threatening messages. They also forge letterheads of police departments and may obtain Aadhaar cards from illicit sources.
