This week is #nationalapprenticeshipweek. I was scrolling through LinkedIn this morning, looking at excellent posts from leading retailers, manufacturers, etc. Most of those posts focussed on school leaver apprenticeships, providing vocational training for young people to get them into the workforce. I am a massive advocate for this, and if apprenticeships were around when I went to university, I would have pursued that option instead of going to university. I want to raise awareness for another use for apprenticeship and one that goes underrepresented. That use is apprenticeships for people who are at any point in their career. The funding available through the apprenticeship levy can be used by anyone at any point in their career to learn new skills and bring them directly to your business. I was the first person at Red Hat to access the funding for my Senior Leader Degree Apprenticeship and MBA. Since then, we’ve had two more Red Hatters join the program, with more joining in April. The course I am on is full of people at all stages of their careers looking to grow, improve and help their organisations become more successful. We’re also looking at how to use the funding to provide specific courses to help underrepresented groups reach their full potential. UK packaging industry faces workforce “time bomb” Peter MacQueen, Principal Lecturer in Apprenticeships at Sheffield Hallam University, home of the UK’s only dedicated packaging undergraduate degree apprenticeship course, has urged that more must be done by the UK packaging industry to address the growing workforce crisis. With the high-profile challenge of fewer young professionals entering the UK packaging industry, Peter emphasises the need for more immediate action to secure the industry’s future. Explaining, Peter said: "It’s no secret that the UK packaging industry has a major issue in attracting, developing and retaining its talent pipeline. We need to get serious about a solution. Today we hosted an ‘unlocking apprenticeship and business support’ event with our colleagues in Centre for Enterprise Manchester Metropolitan University, Greater Manchester Chamber, UK and GMLPN. Over 20 leaders and managers from organisations across Greater Manchester attended to hear about the support available from onboarding a new apprentice, to upskilling current staff members, and programmes to support leadership and business growth. What do employers need to know about apprenticeships and how much do they cost? A levy, which supports the training of all apprentices, is paid by large employers with a pay bill of over £3m. (They pay 0.5% of their total annual bill). Employers with a wage bill less than £3m do not pay the levy, but can get funding for up to 10 employees and only have to pay 5% of the cost - about £325 - to train each apprentice. The government pays the rest.
