Why do you eat smelly food? Why do you listen to funny sounding music? Why do you pray to a statue with an elephant head? These questions & more haunted me throughout my childhood. Usually followed by snickers, taunts & laughs. I grew up in a relatively small U.S. town. We were one of four families of color. We were “othered” daily. I know a Barbie Diwali 🪔 would have been a game changer for me. A doll that represented my community in the marketplace. And a doll that could help educate the individuals who othered me growing up. Never underestimate the power of a doll, a book, a film, a toy, or a conversation To start to change How we stop “othering” people.
