📣 News from Virginia: the largest US offshore wind farm gets final permit. Last week, the final air quality permit was granted for Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind Commercial, CVOW-C, project which signalled the final step in authorizing the construction and operation of this large-scale wind farm. Once complete the site will have the capacity to power 660,000 homes via it’s 176 turbines. This promise of renewable energy supply is a welcome contributor to realizing the Biden-Harris Administrators goal of generating 30 gigawatts of clean energy by 2030. #renewableenergy #USOffshoreWind https://lnkd.in/e-nk6Tni

Did you know that the EU added 17 GW of new wind energy in 2023, of which only 3 GW was offshore wind energy? 🌍 While we're happy to see a growth in wind energy development compared to 2022, we're still far behind the 30 GW of new wind farms that is needed on an annual basis to meet the 2030 climate and energy security targets. Offshore wind plays a key role in meeting these targets. 📈 2024 will be an exciting year, and we hope to see that policy initiatives such as the European Wind Power Package translates into industry impact and improving the amount offshore wind energy added. #offshorewind #offshorewindenergy

Bring it on! Chancellor Rachel Reeves yesterday laid down the gauntlet to the renewable energy sector, lifting the effective ban on onshore wind in England. This opens up a huge opportunity, initially to catch up on lost time and then to grow onshore wind to the status it should have in the overall UK energy mix. Insights below from the Ashfords LLP energy consenting team, led by Stephen Humphreys. Aside from the obvious challenge of bringing suitable sites forward through TCPA applications or the NSIP regime (we await clarification) the industry must come together and work with national government to ensure delivery at pace. In particular local decision makers will need sufficient skilled resource to properly assess and help shape projects if this opportunity is to be fully grasped.

Yesterday, the government changed the National Planning Policy Framework to lift the ‘ban’ on new onshore wind developments in England. The new government has announced that the budget for the UK’s upcoming clean energy auction is increasing to a record £1.5bn. This budget increase will raise offshore wind funding to £1.1bn, onshore wind and solar to £185m, and emerging technologies like floating offshore wind and tidal to £270m. We work closely with a range of market leaders within the renewable energy sector, providing products such as turbine blades and power generation equipment.
