When I left medical school I had to make money and the only opportunity at the time was doing ๐๐จ๐จ๐ซ-๐ญ๐จ-๐๐จ๐จ๐ซ ๐ฌ๐๐ฅ๐๐ฌ ๐ข๐ง ๐ฆ๐ฒ ๐ก๐จ๐ฆ๐๐ญ๐จ๐ฐ๐ง...๐๐๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐จ๐ง ๐๐จ๐๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ฌ. Since my father was a surgeon, everyone knew my last name and that I was in medical school. "๐ฏ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐?!" I would hang my head and repeat the same story about leaving. Then shift to try and sell them on a demo. It was humiliating and I could feel the judgement. I didnt know where my career was going but knew my intuition was guiding me in the right direction. I then decided that I wanted to get into medical devices. I had no experience but I just felt thatโs where I needed to go. ๐ ๐ ๐จ๐ญ ๐ฆ๐ฒ ๐๐ข๐ซ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐๐ซ๐๐๐ค ๐๐ฌ ๐ ๐ซ๐๐ฉ ๐๐ญ ๐๐๐ณ๐จ๐ซ ๐๐จ๐๐จ๐ญ๐ข๐๐ฌ. I still didnโt know where I was going but felt I was now at least pointed in the right direction. A year later, I was promoted to US marketing manager. I was unsure about marketing but I was good at it. The role had a massive scope of duties. From shipping robotic systems to marketing meetings with hospital admin, I was doing everything. But I was also learning everything. ๐ ๐ฐ๐๐ฌ ๐ ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ๐ง๐ ๐ฆ๐๐ง ๐๐ข๐ ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐ฌ๐ฒ๐ฌ๐ญ๐๐ฆ. And magically it also helped me figure โmeโ out. When you follow your intuition itโs scary. It never gives details but itโs always right. You donโt need to see ahead 10 steps; you just need the next step. When you know your โwhyโ you can bare any โhowโ. Then be patient. Life can be whatever you want it to be if you choose to be the author. You decide how your circumstances will turn out. The power of perception is in you. Trust the process. Trust yourself. How to save 8+ hours a week as a med rep Most medical sales reps waste a full workdayโฆweekly. How? Driving to an office or account to: - Find out information. - Follow up. - Run into a surgeon. - Etc. Why does this happen? Because you think you need to be face to face to sell. I challenge you to ask yourself when getting in your car: - Can this be a phone call? - Is this information I can look up? - Can this be an email? - Can this be a text message? - Can this be a video message? If you really want to break into the Clinical Medical Device arena, here's a step-by-step guide I've seen proven over and over. Pulling from my experience working at Ocean Medical and speaking with countless individuals who have made the transition, here's how you can pave your way into this industry: 1) Target Large Companies. Begin your journey by aiming for positions at large medical device companies (>1,000). They often have more flexible experience requirements and offer extensive training and onboarding programs to help newcomers acclimate. 2) Apply Strategically. Don't just aim for the job you ultimately want; consider applying for roles that match your current qualifications too. This strategy shows an early track record of your commitment and goals. 3) Show Your Worth. Once in a Medical Device company, it's all about hard work and proving your value. Dedication and performance can set you apart in the eyes of your colleagues and superiors. 4) Seek Exposure. Use your downtime wisely. Volunteer for projects or tasks that provide exposure to the department or role you're interested in. Networking internally can be just as crucial as your external efforts. 5) Leverage Your Experience. Over time, use your proven track record, volunteer experience, and developed communication skills as leverage to transition into your desired role. It might take time, but persistence and performance often pay off. Transitioning into the Clinical Medical Device arena requires persistence, strategic planning, and a willingness to start from where you are with what you have. No matter how wonderful you are, if you're in the wrong business environment, you will be invisible. I'll apply this to our discovery of how we receive a 75% engagement rate, 3x increase consultations, and built trust w/busy surgeons using personalized videos (1/2 minutes). 4 years of data proof of concept. We assumed med tech sales reps would want to learn our approach because traditional sales prospecting is historically difficult and low engagement rate. Yet, 90% of med tech sales reps are indifferent to our approach. This year, we pivoted. If 90% of med tech sales reps are indifferent to learn what we teach, why don't we teach physicians how to use personalized videos to prescribe trust with their patients, earn media attention, and increase patient referrals? We never considered coaching physicians to do what we thought med tech sales reps would do - stand out/build trust/drive revenue using personalized videos. To our excitement, physicians are motivated to learn our personalized video approach. Lesson Learned: We were in the wrong environment & nearly invisible. How might this apply to your situation?
