Ask any seal coating contractor what the biggest threat to the pavement maintenance industry is and they will tell you: ✅ Coal tar bans ✅ Labor ✅ Weather ✅ Material shortages Contrary to popular belief… the LARGEST threat to a asphalt seal coating contractor is competitors who do not know how to “job cost.” This project below: 📋 2,500 square feet of asphalt 📋 80 linear feet of cracks 📋 5 parking stalls, 1 handicap, 2 arrows. How much would your “average” seal coating contractor “bid” the job especially if it’s a “driveway contractor?” Here is the math: - 2,500 sq ft @ $0.25 sq ft = $625.00 - 80 ln ft cracks @ $1.00 ln ft = $80.00 - Line Striping= $200.00 Total: $905.00 You ask a driveway guy or a seal coater who doesn’t know how to job cost how they arrived at those numbers? Answer: ✅ Well that’s what we charge for driveways ✅ That’s the “going rate” ✅ That’s all they are going to pay ✅ I need to keep my guys busy ✅ I am just going to schedule it with another job etc etc etc. *** They don’t realize when they are done doing the job (even the ones hiring laborers under the table and not paying taxes of any type) they are already upside down on the job. They just “paid” the client to let them work for them. My quote for the same job: $2,500.00 minimum to send out a professional fully equipped pavement maintenance crew with experienced craftsmen. My “quoted price” covers all my direct costs, overhead and a profit that makes it worth my time to operate my business. I don’t go by square footage prices, price per foot of cracks, price per line etc. The uneducated seal coating contractor who “bids” these jobs is the same guy who is in essence working for a paycheck every week. He gets to 70 years old and has some preposterous idea that his business is worth anymore than the value of his equipment (which is usually scrap value) and a customer list / phone number which also has little to no value because he spent 40 years “chasing price sensitive” work. And the job he “bid” 👇 ✅ Quick 1 coat spray ✅ Some cold pour crack filler in the cracks ✅ A bucket of traffic paint and a roller for the pavement markings Off to the next job “quickly” so they can make payroll at the end of the week. It is YOUR responsibility as the leader in your local market to EDUCATE the prospect why they are going to waste $905.00 on a poor quality job! EDUCATE your prospects why buying on the “low bid” is simply a waste of money. EXPLAIN that you can only deliver a 1st class service if you can make a profit. ADD value DEMONSTRATE how you are different If you are in the pavement maintenance business and can’t take off 2 weeks for vacation in the middle of the season without your business falling apart- you are most likely following the first pricing example. Feedback from techs is often about tooling on prepping jobs, when work on the coal fired stations was regular we often had this type of tooling ground up in our vans when using the counterbore heads on the clamshells for prepping and match boring or when using the bore mount preppers as the jobs were very regular, now not so much. While standard form tools are good, being able to use the CB module to prep can often be a job saver. To make things a little easier we have had tool shadow boards actioned with the most common tooling used over the past two years to go out with the machines, meaning easy to replace when they come back in by the relevant code and techs can butcher as needed when on site if its a more bespoke prep or they need to cut the tooling down.....if tooling is modified at site it will be returned at end of job to then be copied for future and a code added......MK1 issue, no doubt will be improved. #insitumachining #prepping #pipeprepping #weldpreps #matchboring #reekies.
