Regen Melbourne: A Living Strategy! I. Systems Transformation 20th century approaches to strategy are severely limited by linear theories of change, narrow boundaries, and first-order measurement frameworks. This feels disjointed from the approaches we need to move towards a systems transformation made up of the messiness, participation and dynamism we expect when centering life II. Regen Melbourne Regen Melbourne (RM)'s work sits at the intersection of many new models, frameworks, worldviews and approaches. These include Doughnut Economics, mission-oriented innovation, systems thinking, regenerative practice, collective impact, and a variety of inner practices that connect our personal development to the outer change we aspire to III. The RM Periodic Table  Just as in nature, certain elements of RM’s strategy are stable and strong, and others are unstable and dynamic. And of course, there is a spectrum between. As an example, at the top of the RM periodic table you will see strategic elements like vision and purpose (Vp), principles (Pr) and governance structure (Go) . These are all highly stable elements that create the founding building blocks of their work. In contrast, as you work your way down the RM periodic table, you will find elements like impact model (Im), projects (Pp) and operations (Op), all becoming more and more unstable and dynamic. Of course, neither stable or unstable is inherently good or bad. Amsterdam's approach is to apply the 'doughnut model' to city building. "The model is now used to inform city-wide strategies and developments in support of this overarching idea: providing a good quality of life for all without putting additional pressure on the planet." "The down-scaled model is called a City Portrait, a holistic snapshot of the city aiming to serve as the starting point for big-picture thinking, co-creative innovation, and systemic transformation, according to the released strategy. It also aims to become a stimulus for cross-departmental collaboration within the city, involving a wide array of actors in the decision-making processes that shape the environment." This an example that emphasizes the need to be explicit about the different outcomes that should be reached (so: yes, more housing and yes, in a sustainable way). Models like these allow to frame trade-offs and inform decisions in what is typically a complex thing: city-building.

We have recently brought together a dynamic group of investors for an incredible initiative called Reimagining Opportunities for Investment (ROI) in the South. The focus: creating a sustainable investment ecosystem for undercapitalized communities of color in the Deep South. 📍 A special stop on this journey was the vibrant city of New Orleans, rich in history and culture. Investors delved into its unique blend of African, Native American, Latinx, Asian American and European influences, understanding the need for a collaborative approach to avoid repeating historical disparities. New Orleans is not just a city; it's a hub of entrepreneurial talent and opportunity. However, it faces lingering inequalities. While businesses owned by people of color are on the rise, they receive only 2% of the city's receipts. This inequity underscores the urgent need for collaborative and inclusive investments. The ROI in the South session highlighted key insights from local leaders like Christy Slater, Lamar Gardere and Judy Reese Morse. Their perspectives emphasized the necessity of inclusive economies and nurturing entrepreneurs of color. Looking ahead, ROI in the South will explore sectors like reentry and agriculture, offering more avenues for transformative investments.
