The Alzheimer's Association found that 82% of primary care physicians said they're on the front line of providing care for dementia care, but nearly two in five of them reported that they're never, or only sometimes, comfortable with making a diagnosis of dementia. Early detection is important, and also education about what to expect and what to do in order to help both the caregiver and the individual with dementia. 📢 A new research paper by Dr. Judith Lindert and Prof. Dr. Lutz Wünsch's team "An Optical Tomography-Based Score to Assess Pediatric Hand Burns" This study developed a novel scoring system to accurately assess burn depths in children’s hands: 👉 67 hand burns in 48 children (ages 0-15) were meticulously studied. 👉 OCT scans revealed critical details like surface irregularities, loss of epidermis, and vascular pattern disruptions. 👉 A score of 4 predicted spontaneous healing without the need for skin grafts with a 97% positive predictive value! 👉 Scores of 5 or higher indicated deeper wounds, often requiring grafts, aligning with medical outcomes 80% of the time. 👉 This scoring system has the potential to revolutionize clinical decision-making, enhance outcomes, and reduce hospital stays for pediatric burn patients. 🔗 Dive into the full study and see how OCT is transforming pediatric burn care! https://lnkd.in/grxvXhJR #PediatricBurns #OCT #MedicalInnovation #BurnCare #EuropeanBurnJournal

A groundbreaking new tool from Vanderbilt University Medical Center researchers intends to help pediatricians identify babies at high risk for Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). 🌟 As part of #NationalHeartMonth 💓, our #StaffSpotlight is highlighting a member of staff who works in cardiac care at the hospital. Amelia Lewis, Senior Physiologist, tells us about her role, including what to expect when you visit for cardiac testing and when you should get tested. "Day-to-day I carry out a variety of different diagnostic tests on people’s hearts, focusing on the electrical system, known as the heart's rhythm. With the heart being one of the most vital organs in the body I think it’s imperative to look after it, particularly if you’re someone who comes from a family with a history of any heart problems. The most common tests we offer initially to check heart health usually involves electrocardiograms (ECG), ambulatory heart and blood pressure monitoring, along with multiple forms of exercise tests. The tests are used more frequently to rule out any underlying abnormalities, and when performed on a regular basis they can also give valuable data showing any changes, improvements or deterioration of the heart’s function. It's best to get a heart check done if you have any symptoms such as palpitations, chest pains, inappropriate shortness of breath and/or dizziness or blackouts. But there any many different reasons someone might want to investigate their heart, such as those who have a family history of heart conditions. What I love most about my job is the aspect of helping people. I also love working with the heart because there is always more to learn about and understand. I was initially drawn to this field when studying at university - one of my favourite things was analysing and interpreting ECG’s. I love all kinds of puzzles and to me that’s what I see an ECG as. I also had so many incredible teachers and mentors through my study who encouraged me to pursue this pathway." 🌟 A big thank you to Emergency Department Anne Healy and Stroke CNS Mary Murphy at Mercy University Hospital for inviting me to help facilitate their inter-departmental stroke simulations! 🌟 With guidance from the well-established simulation program at CUH, we successfully ran a comprehensive standardised patient FAST call simulation that covered the entire journey from pre-alert at the ED all the way through to Thrombectomy. Simulations like these are incredibly valuable, as they have the potential to significantly enhance patient care. By improving our time to decision in stroke patients, we can make the entire treatment process smoother and more efficient. As we know, time is brain, and every second counts when dealing with stroke patients. 🧠⏱️ Being part of such initiatives is truly rewarding. It allows us to provide critical guidance, foster interdisciplinary teamwork, and witness firsthand the benefits that well-executed simulations can bring to clinical practice. These exercises not only help refine skills but also ensure that all team members are well-prepared to handle real-life emergencies with confidence and precision. I am thrilled to see how these simulations contribute to improving outcomes for patients and am excited about the progress that will be achieve together in the coming months.
