And then Tara and Glen, two friends, sent me a New York Times article titled "What Does Retirement Really Mean?" It contains multiple stories and examples of retirement that are really quite good. I read this fantastic thought provoking article on retirement and how retirees have approached their own retirements. It showcases real retirees and their thoughts, feelings and how they have handled the transition to retirement. Very heart warming and an insight into what we will all face in different forms, when we push that big R button! As advisers we see this with clients and appreciate their fears, their opportunities, and their excitement at pursuing new hobbies & interests. Here is a very interesting article from the The New York Times offering different perspectives about the meaning of retirement. The experiences are varied, and cover the entire spectrum of the expected and unexpected. One of my favorite reflections came from Kevin Mihaly, who like me doesn't like the word 'retirement': “Don’t use the word retirement. It sounds decrepit and connotes imagery of rocking chairs and poor health. Somewhere, I came across the Spanish word for retirement: jubilación! Now doesn’t that sound more approachable and appealing?” Many people hire a financial planner to assist with the financial aspects of retirement, and a lawyer to assist with estate planning and life care needs, and an insurance professional. People should also consider hiring a coach who has experience and knowledge about all the other non-financial areas one can explore prior to and during 'retirement', i.e., navigating this transition, purpose finding, community, engagement, aging, and exploring all the possibilities available in your next phases/chapters of life. #retirement #aging #transition

Identity, time, and reinvention in retirement are themes in this insightful NYT article. While it features folks in their 60s and 70s, the same questions are relevant for my GenX compatriots.
