Hey Lemonaid Health (part of 23andMe)! Let's talk about your responsibility as a medical care provider, how that shows up in the #userexperience, and the intersecting ethical boundaries of #commerce and #healthcare. As a potential patient/customer, let me set the stage. I was laid off last year, between tech roles, so I am stretching my pennies. Since affordable whole health insurance was tied to my employment at my last company, I was considering your service to meet some of my immediate needs. In the context of our existing healthcare landscape, I think it's great that there are services filling the niche for folks who could benefit from medical guidance, #prescription, and #telehealth at a nominal price point....But I digress. I'm sharing today to discuss your use of #socialproof. After your onboarding flow, I returned to my account and was greeted by an experience that showed an a-la-carte menu of health service offerings. Many of these were tagged as "Popular." This is a social proof element. #socialproof is a well understood phenomenon where people look to others' actions or opinions to guide their own behavior, especially in uncertain situations. It's largely used in marketing and commerce to persuade customers to convert, take action, or build trust and confidence in their offering. This does not mean that social proof drives folks to beneficial decisions. If you live in a city, you might have waited in line for a popular restaurant, only to be met by a disappointment meal. The stakes are higher in a medical context. A patient might be filled with uncertainty and looking for reassurance. In a self-guided scenario where they are looking to address their unique health needs... • How does persuading a patient that a specific prescription is popular influence their decision making? • How might anecdotal evidence or advertising affect a patient's ability to self-assess their actual conditions? • How would this influence affect the information a patient gives to a doctor or nurse practitioner? • What are the risks to a patient who is anecdotally influenced to use a prescription they do not need, or is not suited to their condition? • What are other stressors are be influencing a patient to make a decision? This example in the screenshot (and the rest of their experience) is a low hanging fruit that can be addressed by Lemonaid Health (part of 23andMe), but I won't dive into a strategy for that in this post. Rather, I'd love to hear thoughts from folks working in or regulating this space. Personal story: After months of a very restrictive diet to combat some health issues, I learned that my lab results are now worse. It became clear that I’m up against genetics and I needed some additional support and encouragement. Knowing it was covered by my medical insurance, I turned to a popular psychology-based wellness membership, which is something I would never have done if I had to pay out of pocket. I’m getting the encouragement I need and gaining valuable insight about my health. Why do I share this? Because often additional “Value Adds” are sold with medical policies. Over the years these value adds have gotten even more valuable. But folks often don’t know these resources are available to them. There’s a good chance your medical plan has a free resource to help you explore your options and get started.
