Get a Job in Biotech | 1:1 Coaching. Courses. Community.

If you've been told to use a "functional resume", I'm sorry to tell you that nobody in biotech actually uses that. In fact, it's one of the most incoherent ways to present yourself. Instead of using gimmicks, work on demonstrating your value clearly. 𝗪𝗵𝘆? Because recruiters have 100s of applications to review, hiring managers are busy, and are generally looking for a few key things before they decide to read more. Unlike grant applications and manuscripts, there is no reviewer whose job it is to read and nit pick every single detail of your resume. Instead, someone will look at it for a few seconds, and if it's packed full of information with 4000 characters on a page, you can forget about it. DELETE. If your resume leaves your value open to interpretation, or if it depends on inference - I promise they won't interpret it the way you had hoped. 𝗦𝗼 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼? Rethink what your resume is. It is NOT the same thing as your academic CV. It is a focused, marketing document. You need to speak in the terms your audience understands, format in a way that is easy to read, and highlight only the things your audience cares about. There are several methods to do this, but the basic anatomy of a biotech resume can look something like this: Executive summary Core competencies Experience Technical skills Publications If you're looking for a no-nonsense, no bull💩 course with all the templates you need - there's a solution for you at Trulitica. Best part? You can get through this course in 1 week, on your own schedule, and it costs less than dinner at a fancy restaurant. Hello Ali! Thanks for the clarification. I have heard a lot about how the functional resume is crucial to help you get past the ATS system. However, none of the recruiters or hiring managers I have spoken to at various career fairs and networking events for pharma have ever encouraged me to use it. This has always confused me, so I appreciate you talking about this. :)

Ever notice how pretty much everyone has had a bad experience with manipulative sales tactics, but they don't realize that they're essentially trying to do the same thing when searching for the magic gimmick that will allow them to bypass doing the work of learning how to communicate clearly and persuasively?

Ali Divan, Ph.D. I think it’s also important to remember that resumes of recent graduates will be very different from those of mid-career scientists/academics. That’s also something that is missing from the recruiting side. Some candidates have leadership experience in multiple roles across several years and quite honestly it does the candidate and hiring manager a disservice to destill it to one bullet point!
