"Pharmacology Poet" - launching the Pharmacology Poet as a learning tool into the world! Making key pharmacology concepts sticky! #pharmacologypoet #meded #GenerativeAI Experiencing the power of ChatGPT (and similar generative AI tools) in a new and exciting way with the Pharmacology Poet, another testament to its creative applications. Poetry has a distinctive ability to evoke emotions, stimulate imagination, and convey complex ideas concisely. When applied to pharmacology, poems can transform abstract concepts into vivid imagery, making them more tangible and memorable for students. Students are encouraged to actively participate in deciphering and interpreting pharmacological principles by engaging with rhymes, rhythm, and metaphor, fostering a deeper understanding of the subject matter. ChatGPT (and similar tools) can be a valuable resource in writing pharmacology poems. It can generate ideas, clarify concepts, and provide feedback and revision by engaging in conversational prompts and exchanges. This is the poem I generated using free version of chatGPT and recited in class to conclude my flipped classroom "Opioid Pharmacology" session. In pain's realm, opioids find their place,  Easing torment with a gentle embrace.  But alongside relief, risks abound, Adverse effects in shadows found. Constipation grips, nausea ensnares, Respiration slows, danger flares.  Tolerance rises, addiction's song,  Withdrawal whispers, dark and long. Yet crucial their role, cannot deny,  In managing pain, they reach the sky.  A lifeline for those in anguish's grasp,  Opioids offer respite, a steadfast clasp. But wary we must, for dangers hide,  Naloxone stands as a guardian guide.  With swift reversal, it saves the day,  Resuscitating breath, keeping death at bay. In balance lies the healing art,  Opioids bind to receptors, a vital part.  Naloxone's presence, a beacon's light,  Guiding the journey from darkness to light.

#ChatGPT can lead to Hyper-Proliferative nature of scientific contents/publications/Ideas etc. This could be debatable that may depend upon the analysis parameters. Whether ChatGPT can lead to the #Down_Disruptive or Down_Innovative settings among researchers. This could be understood with an analogous to cancer cells that Hyper-proliferation is always bad leading to errors and mistakes in cellular processes. Similarly, #Hyper_Proliferative_Scientists may tend to be #Down_Disruptive_Scientific_process and ultimately chance of errors and mistakes. Hyper-Proliferative Nature of Scientific Contents/Ideas assisted by ChatGPT's ability to generate vast amounts of text can indeed lead to a proliferation of scientific content, publications, and ideas. This can potentially accelerate the pace of research and innovation by providing researchers with a broader range of ideas and perspectives to explore. However, whether this proliferation is beneficial or detrimental depends on various factors such as the quality of the generated content, the ability of researchers to filter and evaluate the information, and the impact on scientific rigor and credibility. Simply generating a large volume of content does not guarantee progress if the quality is compromised. Down_Disruptive vs. Down_Innovative Settings among Researchers could be plausible that an excessive proliferation of ideas and content could lead to confusion, fragmentation, and inefficiency within the scientific community. Researchers may find it challenging to navigate through the abundance of information, leading to a diffusion of effort and resources. Conversely, the abundance of diverse ideas facilitated by ChatGPT could spark unexpected connections, interdisciplinary collaborations, and novel approaches to research problems. It may foster a more open and inclusive research environment where unconventional ideas have a chance to flourish. Comparing hyper-proliferative scientists to cancer cells suggests a negative connotation, emphasizing the potential for errors and mistakes in scientific processes. While unchecked proliferation in any field can indeed lead to issues such as duplication, misinformation, and reduced quality control, it's crucial to recognize that the analogy may oversimplify the complexities of scientific research and innovation. Not all proliferation is inherently bad; the key lies in managing and directing it effectively. Just as controlled cell division is essential for growth and development in organisms, a certain degree of proliferation in scientific discourse can drive progress when accompanied by mechanisms for critical evaluation, peer review, and validation. The analogy to cancer cells serves as a cautionary reminder, but it's important to approach it with a nuanced understanding of the dynamics of scientific inquiry and innovation.

How the same prompt to #ChatGPT and #Bard yielded different outcomes in #scientificwriting. To streamline my scientific writing process, I wanted to understand which AI model performed better: ChatGPT or Bard. I assigned them similar tasks to evaluate their responses. So, I asked the following questions to both AI tools: ❓ Question 1: “Write an outline for the research paper on risk factors for oral cancer. Provide a detailed outline describing the introduction, methods, discussion, and conclusion.” ⚡ChatGPT response 1️⃣ Introduction Background Brief overview of oral cancer Significance of understanding risk factors Purpose of the study Research objectives Hypotheses ⚡Bard response 1️⃣ Introduction Brief overview of oral cancer: incidence, mortality, impact Importance of understanding risk factors: early detection, prevention strategies Thesis statement: This paper will critically analyze the current understanding of major risk factors associated with oral cancer. ❓ Question 2: “Can you provide relevant research papers on the topic? Include references.” Both tools failed to provide relevant references to support their arguments. Next, I requested research papers specifically related to each outlined section. ✔️ ChatGPT response Use PubMed (https://lnkd.in/dJHvV4vn) and enter keywords such as "oral cancer risk factors" in the search bar. ✔️Bard response Tobacco Use: Tobacco Use and Risk of Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma: A Meta-Analysis. (American Journal of Epidemiology, 2012): https://lnkd.in/dtw9gr2W Smokeless Tobacco and Oral Cancer: A Multicenter Study in India. (International Journal of Cancer, 2010): https://lnkd.in/d5j-izDm ❓ Question 3: “Can you write an introduction of 400 words on the topic?” Both tools generated exceptional introductions. However, the lack of in-text citations makes it useless. ❓Question 4: “Can you include in-text citations to make it more relevant?” Both tools included a list of citations, but unfortunately, all references were incorrect in terms of year, title, and author alignment. ⚡ Conclusion: ✡️ Bard provides a more comprehensive outline for a research paper compared to ChatGPT. ✡️ Bard successfully listed relevant research papers, and upon cross-checking, all references were accurate. ✡️ Writing any section of a research paper with ChatGPT or Bard is not recommended. Without in-text citations, the data lacks authenticity. ✡️ The in-text citations generated by both tools were incorrect. Will biomedical scientists end up working for TikTok? According to a recent article published by Forbes the Chinese social media company is aggressively hiring PhDs in the US via its AI-based parent company ByteDance. This is not something new since Google parent Alphabet moved in the healthcare space years ago via its Moonshot Factory (previous Google X) and more recently via Google DeepMind. ChatGPT, Gemini can do amazing things but - for the moment and luckily - human intelligence is still needed for drug development. Only the future will tell us if the next blockbuster drug will come out from TikTok rather than a pharma/biotech company. Very likely the future of drug development will look hybrid, half-human, half-AI, and more partnerships between pharma/biotech companies and AI companies will take place. What really counts is to deliver drugs to the patients in need always with the same sense of urgency and AI will very likely allow us to do it more rapidly and more precisely. In any case, form now on I will look at TikTok - and my son, user of this platform - with different eyes. Thanks to AI the boundaries between very different industries are becoming thinner. And my son may end up one day developing drugs in a social media company rather than a biotech ? Happy New Year !!!

Recently, I read two papers discussing the use of ChatGPT in medical education and diagnostics, and I'd like to share my thoughts. Both studies shed light on its potential as an educational tool and its limitations as a diagnostic aid. First, both papers emphasize that while ChatGPT shows promise in medical education, it cannot replace human expertise. The Evaluation of ChatGPT found that ChatGPT correctly answered only 49% of 150 complex clinical cases, with an overall accuracy of 74%, highlighting its strength in ruling out incorrect diagnoses with a specificity of 82.89%. However, its sensitivity was only 48.67%, showing a need for improvement in identifying correct diagnoses (Hadi et al., 2024). Similarly, in Reshaping medical education, ChatGPT scored 67.1% on the PES exam, demonstrating its usefulness as a supplemental tool but falling short of fully replacing expert knowledge (Wójcik et al., 2024). Second, both studies recognize ChatGPT's ability to simplify complex medical concepts, making it valuable for medical learners. According to Evaluation of ChatGPT, the tool provides understandable explanations that help learners navigate diagnostic steps and concepts (Hadi et al., 2024). Likewise, Reshaping medical education notes that ChatGPT's advances in natural language processing make it a valuable educational aid, offering personalized responses in real time (Wójcik et al., 2024). However, both papers caution against relying on ChatGPT due to the risk of inaccuracies. Evaluation of ChatGPT points out a 13% rate of false positives and negatives, which could lead to diagnostic errors (Hadi et al., 2024). Reshaping medical education similarly warns that while ChatGPT performed well on the exam, its limitations prevent it from fully replacing healthcare professionals (Wójcik et al., 2024). In conclusion, while ChatGPT shows potential as an educational tool, it still has significant shortcomings in diagnostics. Future research should focus on improving its diagnostic accuracy and exploring ways to better integrate it with human expertise for optimal use. As AI/ML is increasingly integrated across drug discovery, life science companies are recruiting for more traditional tech backgrounds, and having to compete against tech salaries, especially for ML and SWE hires. Will be interesting to see how biotech and pharma adapt as they try to bridge the gap in effort to stay competitive. Perhaps unsurprisingly, I have seen biotech adjust a bit faster than pharma so far.
