It was a fascinating discussion. One think I learned about was the The Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility CCRIF SPC which has some innovative approaches for setting up parametric insurance that could be useful in the US and elsewhere.

Spent a day last week talking #climateadaptation with one of the most diverse groups I’ve been part of. Kudos to Ashley Ward, Martin Doyle, Nicholas Institute for Energy, Environment & Sustainability and Southeast and Caribbean Disaster Resilience Partnership (SCDRP) for assembling an impressive collection of global-regional-local practitioners to dig deep into the role insurance plays – and can play – in advancing climate adaptation. Whether it’s new offerings like parametrics or Community-Based Catastrophe Insurance, using its muni bond clout to nudge/push issuers, or catalyzing partnership-based approaches, insurers have many tools to bring to this challenge. One question asked many times – directly and indirectly – was the extent to which the insurance mechanism should be deployed as a form of regulator for land-use and managed retreat challenges. Not sure I’m convinced, but then UL Solutions and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety / Highway Loss Data Institute essentially play a quasi-regulatory consumer protection role. Thoughts?
