In a bid to minimize their own culpability in the data breach that exposed the PII and DNA information of millions, 23andMe blames the victims of the breach, while downplaying their own negligence. They base their accusation on the 14,000 accounts that were initially breached due to customers recycling their credentials, making their accounts susceptible to credential stuffing. In the escalating cyber arms race and the ever greater interconnectivity in the cybersphere, companies and individuals have to take cybersecurity seriously for their own protection, and that of others. We can no longer view ourselves as islands in the ocean of the internet. We are all connected, and our negligence, whether it's due to cybersecuirty ignorance or laziness, both of which I have been guilty, the breach of one accout has a ripple effect that can potentially destroy the lives of many and/or the reputation and possible financial stability of entire companies. Cybersecurity is a joint effort in which we all must participate if we are to have even a modicum of security as we increasingly live our lives connected to the cybersphere.

If your personal data is leaked on the dark web, act quickly. Assess the extent of the leak 🔍. Change all compromised passwords and credentials 🔑. When I thought I've seen it all, there's 23andME. Instead of admitting their security negligence they blame the victims of the data breach for reusing passwords. This is just scandalous, i have no other words for it. If you provide a service that processes such sensitive data it's your duty to protect them in every way you can. And yes in an ideal world people don't reuse passwords, but the world is not ideal, so accommodate for that in the design and implementation if your service.
