This week is Alcohol Awareness Week and we have been working with the charity Alcohol Change UK on the campaign film and a series of short content films to raise awareness. Taking place from 1 to 7 July, Alcohol Awareness Week is a week of awareness-raising and campaigning for change. This year the theme is 'Understanding alcohol harm’ and our film explores many aspects of alcohol harm and the impact on health, family and wider society. The film discusses how alcohol can sometimes play a centre stage role in our lives. It’s promoted as we watch our favourite sports, advertised as we travel to work and strategically placed in our favourite films and TV shows. It’s there when we celebrate, commiserate and when we’re just trying to cope. Sometimes we find that alcohol takes centre stage in our relationships, in our daily lives, in our celebrations. It's almost as though we spotlight it. It's almost as though, you know, we're with a group of friends around the table. But what we're really doing is focusing on the alcohol. If we as a society believe we need alcohol, have fun, we have a problem. We use alcohol for so many different reasons. Sometimes it's commiserations, sometimes it's celebration. Going to work, socializing would be colleagues. Socializing with deep brands. There is a a big drinking culture in sports and a lot of it can get toxic. I used to go away a lot following Manchester United and following the football team and drinking was always a big part of that. You'd be on the coast drinking you're drinking when you got to the game, drinking before the game, drinking after the game and I'll be honest with you, the football was secondary A lot of the time it was just about the drinking. It's easy to lose sight of the fact that we live in a really Alco centric society. Advertising for alcohol is is everywhere it's on the TV, it's on billboards, it's. Is on the tube we are continually bombarded with our cult imagery and the messaging that you know we must incorporate alcohol into our lives harm can be as severe as long term health conditions impacting people's relationships, impacting people's ability to go to work, to be at work and to be productive at work. When we talk about society there is a huge cost to both the NHS and our police and crime court system by. Ohh, my alcohol. So in a way we all pay the costs of alcohol. There's 60 cease conditions directly related to alcohol harm and you could go to up to 200 because we're not only speaking about the physical issues of it, you also looking at the collateral damage that alcohol causes. So you're looking at fall, break up in family relationships, stress, etcetera, which has never counted in the statistics. Alcohol is now fifth major cause of death in the UK. You know, we're firefighting. Alcohol harm, it's serious, but it's not inevitable, and it's really, really positive that so many people are wanting to open up the conversation about alcohol harm. Having that lifestyle choice that doesn't revolve around alcohol would have seen like a bit of an alien concept 10/15/20 years ago, but I think we're seeing that more and more. So alcohol doesn't have to be at the center of our lives at all. It's quite a recent phenomenon that we've all been exposed to this level of marketing, this level of promotion. It doesn't have to be like this and we could make change tomorrow. There is a growing public support for action on alcohol harm and that's a great thing to see. There have been many fantastic organisations taking part in our Alcohol Awareness Week campaign to raise awareness for alcohol harm in and around the workplace. However, alcohol awareness is not just for Alcohol Awareness Week. Alcohol is part of our daily lives and frequent changes in workloads can lead to increases in alcohol consumption. On average, consumption tends to be higher among people in managerial and professional roles compared to lower paid occupations. As many people are returning to work following the summer break, now is a great time to prioritise this important topic in the wellbeing schedule. Last month, to coincide with Alcohol Awareness Week, our Wellbeing team hosted an Alcohol Awareness webinar in partnership with Alcohol Change UK. We know that alcohol can often be used as a way to cope with life and work pressures. We want our employees to have the tools and guidance they might need should they ever find themselves in an unhealthy relationship with alcohol. Dependent drinkers and their families are often victims of stigma, whereby they are negatively judged, devalued and excluded. This stigma can come from the way harmful drinking is talked about in the media or by friends and colleagues, or even relatives. It is often hard to avoid such stigmatisation, and the consequences can be damaging for both the drinker and their loved ones.
